What is a Custom ROM?

A custom ROM is a custom, modified operating system that you can install on your Android device. Basically it's like installing Windows OS on a Macbook. By installing a custom ROM, you can bypass stock factory settings like locked hotspot tether, install new Android versions early, or even convert your phone into another OS.

With a custom ROM, you can really maximize the capabilities of your smartphone by adding custom features that have been developed by open source developers.

How to Install Custom ROMs

First, you will need to root your device, if it is not rooted yet, follow our root tutorial and root your phone.

Once rooted, you should have TWRP installed on your phone. Installation of a custom ROM is easy if you learn the basic of it. If you don't know how to install custom ROMs using TWRP recovery, see our tutorial on How to Install Custom ROM using TWRP!

I want to order S4 but I want 32gb or 64gb and I am not sure if I should order T-mobile or AT&T model. I am on AT&T but I was thinking of going to T-mobile but I like to see how good is there LTE service, as of now it is not in NEW York so I can’t test it. I think if I get the T-mobile one I can use it on AT&T for now and then switch. Also I wanted to know if I can run the App2ExtSD Hack on theS4. Please let me know..Thanks!!

I’ve rooted my GS4 successfully and it works fine; however all of a sudden when I reboot the device there’s a “SAMSUNG CUSTOM” boot logo with an unlocked padlock. Is there a way for me to change it back to the typical Galaxy S4 boot logo w/o having to unroot?

    • markbc says:

use ChainFire’s Triangle Away from the play store -it worked on my I337.
Tip: Reset the counter to zero -even if it already says zero. This works for
some and not others so use at your own risk!

Hey everyone. What’s the best app to overclock the M919 version? I always used No Frills CPU. Wondering if there is anything better out there.

Hi, I have the I9500 with the latest update.

When I follow your instructions and I had on ok from Odin…..But I can’t see the recovery mode like i had in my galaxy 2 root.

There’s an icon saying “no request” or something like it.
I had also tried to change kernel but nothing helped….. Can you help me with that? Unless it’s rooted I cant use my Titanium backup…..

    • ms.samsprung says:

Do you mean that while connected to your PC, with the Odin window open, when you click “PDA” that you can’t find the file? If that’s it then I would suggest double checking the download itself, making sure its complete by just comparing the actual file size to what its supposed to be ( occasionally I’ve found when the mirrors are busy my dwnld isnt what its supposed to be) & then I’d suggest putting all the necessary files together in the same place on your C drive prior to starting.

      Hope this helps, Ms. Samsprung.

  12. Oliver says:

Just a quick question. i’m a first time android user and i just got my S4 from t mobile, first thing i noticed is the volume, even if its in max level,i can barely hear whenever i am talking to someone. can i adjust the volume level if i rooted my device? Thanks in advance.

    • brad almond says:

Rooting shouldn’t (and doesn’t) alter your volume controls. If you can barely hear who you are talking to on your new S4 for T-Mobile (ie. an SGH-M919) — even when it’s set to max volume, then something is probably wrong with your phone.

  13. Paul says:

hello.I’ve T-mobile S IV M919 it’s only 6 language to select. can I add more language in it with out root it .If so how to do it?

  14. Doug says:

If I rooted my i9505 with Odin3-v1.85, can I go back and “reroot” it with the CWM?

    • ms.samsprung says:

      Hi Doug,
To root any Samsung device it is necessary to use a 3 “step” process, please excuse the over simplification.
      1) you get your device into “download mode”, connect to PC & Odin program;
      2) utilize Odin ( or Heimdall in some older devices) to install custom recovery. After installation of custom recovery you’ll rarely need to access “dwnld mode ” or use Odin again for this device;
      3) from your custom recovery install device appropriate “”, which you would have previously dwnld to your device from sites like this. Now you’re rooted.
My point being, Odin & CWM (or TWRP) aren’t mutually exclusive. In fact quite the opposite, they are necessary partners in the rooting process. Now I’m pretty sure there will be some out there that would say you can install su binaries directly from Odin, bypassing installation of a custom recovery altogether, but unless your a dev I don’t see why you would. Even if you are a dev I still don’t see why you would. Your custom recovery is where you’ll do all your Rom installs & mods, & more importantly where you’ll need to get to if brick your phone.

      Hope this helps, ms.samsprung.

  15. sam says:

hi, thanks for your great website …

i have a question, if i root my galaxy s4 (i9500) using the CWM recovery as described in your video tutorial … will i still be able to have my phone updated via OTA ?
i will keep my firmware and my kernel unchanged, the goal is to have root access without loosing OTA update feature … is this possible?

    • markbc says:

OTA will break root -and the newest OTA for ATT will (I think) eliminate your ability to root your phone (for now).

    Excellent site and advice.

This is first time rooting and I used the CF-Auto Root method. The phone is rooted fine but if I turn it off and back on or restart the phone it wont boot up. It takes me straight to recovery mode where the only option that works is Factory re-set. This is very frustrating and I’m struggling to find a way to resolve this. Is there something I can do to get my phone to boot up normally?

    • Max Lee says:

Not sure, I have not used CF auto root method, would suggest using CWM or TWRP method instead, you might want to unroot first.

      • brad almond says:

Oh, my. Many of you folks haven’t done any homework. Read about WHY to root (or not root) your phone before doing it. You want to root your phone before installing a “custom recovery” like CWM or TWRP. A custom recovery gives you the ability to perform a full Nandroid backup. That is, it allows you to save a full copy of your phone’s system. It also gives you the ability to restore your phone’s system from a backup file. That’s the first (and most important) step in gaining control over your phone: the ability to save/restore its current state. That way, you can always fix it if something goes wrong. You don’t want to take OTA (Over The Air) updates after you’ve rooted your phone because the OTAs will usually unroot your phone — and then you can’t restore your system from your backups. Instead, you use your custom recovery tool (eg. CWM or TWRP) to flash custom ROMs. If you want to flash a stock ROM (ie. one that is just like an OTA update), then you still want to flash it just like any other custom ROM. In the case of a stock ROM, it should only differ from an OTA update in that it keeps your phone rooted — whereas an OTA update will unroot your phone.

  25. Frank says:

I rooted my S4 with the motochopper method. I then tried to reboot into recovery by holding the volume down and power button and the phone attempted download and root using the method described for a i9500 model s4 (mine is an M919). After letting my phone sit overnight it was still t the android screen. I pulled the battery, restarted fine but I am missing about 5gb or internal storage. How do I get that back?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

              format /cache
              format /sd card
              format /external_sd
              format /data and media and /data/media (/sdcard)

  41. Paul 'pflip' S. says:

Hi Max– Glad to join your newsletter! I do have a question that I’ll ask you here and by email, since it’s probably killing other people who did the same thing as me. So, hopefully we can get some peace of mind. So, I have the SGH-I377. I was able to root my phone for a short time span of about 10 minutes, with my major objective of just deleting as many preinstalled apps as possible to clean house. I was rooted for about 10 minutes, then decided like an impulsive 36 year old to hit the AT&T update right as it popped up without thinking twice. You’ve probably gotten the same scenario from a plenty. So, I’m in the purgatory of not being rooted, but having the ‘look’ as if I was (boot screen lock, full 16GB, etc.).

Unless you already know of a way to get us poor souls back to root, I was going to call AT&T and get my phone unlocked. ALSO, I was going to maybe ask them whether or not they can remotely set my phone back before the update (because of ‘problems’ I’m having with the update.). I’ve read about the idea, but couldn’t find anything regarding whether AT&T techs could do this. DO YOU KNOW IF THEY CAN DO THIS, Max?

You may or may not know about my 2nd issue, but I have a torrent copy of the latest Nova Launcher Prime (2.1.1). Essentially, if you already created backups through Nova and you have to reinstall Nova again, Nova CANNOT restore your saves on the ONLY directory that Nova gives you (You cannot change the save path.). So, I saved the backup folder and put it on my SD card. My phone is acting a bit quirky so I’m not sure if it’s the Nova copy or the purgatory state that my phone is in. I just don’t want to lose my phone setup for the THIRD time if I just buy a good copy of Nova. IS THERE A NON ROOT WAY OF SAVING AN ‘IMAGE’ OF YOUR PHONE OR AN APP THAT I CAN USE TO DO THIS? IS THERE AN APP OUT THERE THAT KEEPS EVERYTHING THE SAME WHEN YOU BACKUP THEN RESTORE? Creating a backup image would be a second reason to root my phone, but I want to have all the official updates, so I definitely want to root again, but just for me to do the things you can do that a non rooted phone can’t.

You’re most likely inundated by questions by us impatient children, but your input to my questions are always much appreciated! Actually, this would only be my 2nd email to you, but you were kind enough to answer my first question pretty timely and with some thought!

Thanks very much in advance, dude!

    • Max Lee says:

I don’t think AT&T can remotely rewind the updates, that would be impossible since AT&T are the ones who put that lock on there, not sure if you can flash older firmwares via ODIN I haven’t tried yet (it can’t hurt to try) but people have told me they couldn’t.

For Nova launcher, you can probably make a backup using Titanium Backup app instead try that.

Max, I have a problem! Three months ago I purchased my GS4 and rooted it the first day, achieved WIFI tether the next day. Everything was fine until two days ago when I noticed that while my WIFI indicator was on, although I had no signal. After going through setting, without fixing my problem I decided a “reboot” was in order. Upon reboot my phone began to lock. Sometimes at Sprints yellow screen and sometime it would get a little farther. I followed your “unroot” procedure (without running Triangle first as my phone was unusable) with no luck. After step one, my phone would boot but lock shortly after using it. I then performed the factory reset. While it did fix the locking up problem (my phone was usable again) I could not re-root it. I don’t think the reset got rid of everything as some of the apps I had installed were still there after the reset. Have you run into this and if so, what was the fix? Thank you.

  73. Neutino7 says:

What is your version of S4?

  74. horhe08 says:

I did a factory reset thru twrp which was the most stupid thing and lost everything. My S4 GT-I9505 won’t go beyond the logo of samsung anymore when you turn it on. I downloaded the stock firmware of my device and tried to flash it thru odin and after it reboots and you see the PASS, nothing happens, it’s just the logo again of samsung.
Please anyone help me. I just got my phone last night.

I have a question about OTA software update to 4.3 when already rooted and running BobcatRom… Do I have to un-root in order to update to 4.3 and if so what is the best method?

Thanks so much for helping a newbie. …

    • brad almond says:

Walabee — Typically you have to perform an explicit update in order to update your phone. In other words, your phone usually won’t update itself unless (1) you have configured it to automatically update its software or else (2) you explicity update its software. Typically the update controls are located under [Settings.About Device.Software Update] or [Settings.System Updates] or a similarly named menu area. You don’t want to take an OTA update unless you want to replace your rooted system with an unrooted system. But you probably want to remain rooted. To do that, you must replace your already rooted system with another rooted system by flashing a custom ROM. In your case, if you want to update to Android 4.3, then you want to flash a custom ROM for the stock version of Android 4.3. Use your custom recovery software (eg. CWM or TWRP) to flash your custom ROM. Make sure that your new ROM contains a rooted system if you want your phone to remain rooted. Flash a ROM that contains an unrooted system (or else flash an OTA update) if you want to unroot your phone.

  78. Bob says:

I rooted my p1337 using motochopper and itworks fine. I’ve tired to install the bobcat and wanamlite custom roms but each time I reboot I get ” software not authorized by at&t has been detected on your phone” and the reboot stops. I’ve done a full wipe, wiped the cache and wiped the dalvick cache prior to the install. Any help would be appreciated.

When I click on updates update single settings it says no updates as phones been modified. And when you start it up in the special way it says it’s modified. I need my phone back to the way it was. is there actually a way to get it to say it’s not modified or have I ruined my phone forever? Any help from anyone would be great as I am a complete noob to all this rooting and have no idea what some of the people hear are talking about. Thanks.

I have a tmoble SGH-919 and cant get a custom recovery to install. I’ve tried using Odin to flash both CWM and TWRP. When going into recovery mode it wont go into custom recovery, it’s like it’s the factory recovery. Could it be because its Android 4.4.4? Please help.

i need to know few things. First of all these custom roms really tempt me but on the other side its my first month using s4 and i dont want to root it since rooting voids the warranty. now please tell me if want to upgrade my firmware to lollypop, or pac man unofficially through odin, so will that root my phone or do i need a rooted phone for this purpose. and if the phone has to be rooted then can i revert it back into its initial state, reclaiming the warranty.
Help on my issue will be highly appreciated

Most communications companies (eg. Google, Sprint, Samsung) don’t want people to root their phones because they want to use people’s smart phones as sales/advertising platforms. More specifically, carriers like Sprint, AT&T, and Verizon make billions of dollars each year by pre-loading their customers’ smart phones with apps that will ultimately try to sell them something. That’s what a “branded” phone is: a device that contains pre-installed, carrier-specific advertising apps (aka. bloatware) . The phone manufacturers install special software to prevent customers from deleting apps that they don’t like or from updating their phones to behave the way that they want them to. Most smart phones are actually just fancy, miniature computers that come pre-infected with huge amounts of adware (and the ability to make phone calls). As such, communications companies (including Google — in fact, especially Google) try to make it increasingly difficult for customers to root their phones. That is, it is usually easier to root a phone that is running an older version of software, say Android 4.4.2, than one that is running a newer version, say Android 4.4.4 or 5.1. So users should NOT be in a hurry to update to the latest version of Android if they intend to delay rooting their phone until after its warantee has expired. Note that rooting a phone typically voids its warantee.

I have installed this rom succesfully.
echoe rom s5 port v32.1 part VII. Thank you for good tut.

    now i have 3 questions:
    1. Is it possible to upgrade to newer version on this rom and which version do you recommend?
    2. My battery lifetime is now less as before. What can you advise to solve this?
    3. Do you already have an S5 rom with lollipop stable?

If I try Stock Recovery, what do I give uo? root? can I tem go to TWRP thru Stock Recovery? sources for files needed please.

I have Galaxy S4 on Sprint and am using TWRP recovery. I flashed Cyanogenmod to my phone but it didn’t work, so i went to look for a new mod. None of the custom roms i download showed up in TWRP. I backed up my personal stock rom and flashed it but everytime i turn on my phone, it starts to the Samsung Galaxy S4 screen, then black screen with blue LED light. I downloaded the rooted stock rom but it doesn’t even show up in TWRP. I reallly need help please

I have a SGH M919. I have followed the instructions to root. I flash the twrp through odin. i get the green. good. then when i go into twrp and flash SuperUser it finishes, says sucessful and when I press reboot it says FIx Super User Root Permissions? Root Permissions appear to be lost. Fix root permissions now? (FIxes permissions on SU binary & app).
So I swipe to fix them. It says fixing root permissions, but no sucessful at the bottom of that one. It just suddenly reboots. And no root access. Please help . I followed all the steps to the letter.

Tried the galaxy s6 rom on my s4 (tmobile). Themes won’t work at all. A theme from Google play store won’t even work. Camera has issues too. Tried the insane kitkat rom. Get unfortunately settings has stopped error anytime I open settings . Going back to the s5 echo rom which had no issues. One outa 3 ain’t bad. You have to weight the cool extra things custom roms do against all the bugs. I’m a newbie at the custom rom thing. But it looks to me like bugs are in the lead.

if safestrap recovery is such a pain in the ass. why cant I just flash my I337 with a different bootloader like cwm ? I mean I see all kinda boxes to check in odin like “bootloader update” and “nand erase all” and “re-partition”. Or does no one know what all those do exactly ?
