    Max:

Given a litle more time, could you please include links for stock firmware for some of the “no so major” carriers like USCellular?? I know you can’t carry every one, but USC is a major carrier in the eastern north carolina region and it certainly would be nice to see this without having to piggyback off Verizon’s ROM and such..

    Thanks,

I completely agree. Or piggy back off of Sprint’s. Although in all fairness we do have TeamUSCellular.com but I would love to see USCC get some love here…since I watch a lot of his awesome videos. Stoked about getting my S4 through USCC as soon as they drop the 32GB version.

And as an afterthought if you want to keep up with anything US Cellular for your sites a great place to check out is teamuscellular.com. It’s where I get a lot of my info amongst other sites definitely including yours.

Quick question, This firmware you posting, are they official builds?
Otherwise I’m sure you know, it still says “custom” not “official” in phone.

They are official, if you flash these it will say “official” you have to do a factory reset though after unrooting or before.

The problem is the newest 4.3 jellybean update that just came out locks b the bootloader and people advertise on xda- Developers site will work with newest update but b it does not.
I am a experienced rooter, been doing this for years on various models and the gs4 1337 has been and is the most complicated model by far. If someone can help me I would v really appreciate it. Can’t put b the kit kat rom on the device without rooting it first. Thanks!

Did resolve what ever I did previuosly and now have 9.06 gig of space left on my internal mem compared to the 2.5 gig it was showing previously until redoing the firware. Side note: be carefull twrp , complete wipe in advanced took out everything and made so just had samsung galaxy s4 on my screen, till found the new firmware. Thx for the video tutorials and links Max, helped allot.

    - Will this stock firmware make everything stock and official?
    - What is the procedure to flash this on the S4?
    - Do we still use Odin?

Since I don’t see any replies to your questions I think I can answer a couple. I am on Sprint.

Will this stock firmware make everything stock and official? It will make it stock but not official; You will need reset the binary counter to go back to official. I used Triangle Away
What is the procedure to flash this on the S4? You need to do an unroot and go back to your original stock ROM,
Do your OTA update, then re root… I have not done this myself because Im not confident that I will be able to reroot
with the new update installed. At least for the Spint S4.

Im know Im not Max and I am just sharing what I have learned myself, Please research this information further for
      yourself before attempting.
I do know that Triangle Away does work the Sprint S4 MDC version build to reset your binary counter and take it back to Official

      Reply
      1. jamie

Triangle away app does work with updated mdl update, then factory reset to be back to official. Yes you need to use odin to flash this firmware. After you unroot and ota update, use cf auto root to root again. Will be stock rooted and you can install custom recovery through goo manager if you want twrp, or clockwork mod through other ways included in this website.

I rooted my s4 (at&t i337) and deleted some bloatware (chaton, play books, play music). Apparently something that I deleted messed up my S Voice app. If i download the i337 firmware (above) and boot in clockworkmod recovery and flash that firmware, will it be back to normal? Meaning, will all the bloatware be back on it and hopefully fix my S Voice problem?

Once you get everything working again. You might just try freezing the apps before you

here’s a (probably) noob question. i have an M919. rooted using TWRP method. then i downloaded a bunch of apps, including ROM Manager. I used ROM Manager (which uses CWM) to flash a euroskank ROM. works fairly well (not getting data at the moment). when i try to flash back to my stock ROM backup, i see an “error restoring /data” and the restore exits. the phone won’t boot in this state. can i follow your methodology for “unroot” and flash stock ROM via ODIN to get a stable stock ROM back? will i still have root, or do i need to re-root? will i still have that backed-up euroskank ROM after i perform all of this? i can get into recovery and flash and reflash and flash again. only ROM that works for me right now is the euroskank.

any insights will be helpful and are welcome!

    1. Steve Punter

In actual fact the Rogers, Bell, and Telus versions are IDENTICAL. If you look at the root directory of any of these phones, even directly from the store, you’ll find ALL of the bloatware APK files are in there. Presumably the installation detects which network you are on and installs the appropriate components. Somehow it seems that yours mistakenly thought you have a Bell Mobility S4.

Have you tried a re-install? Maybe the mistake was a one-time thing.

Yes stock recovery will delete CWM recovery. If you are not returning for warranty but just want the latest update, go check the S4 thread on XDA as there should be a CWM flashable rooted stock ROM with the updates which you won’t lose root. I will also try to post those soon on this site.

I’ll start by saying, you’re the man. I have a fully rooted galaxy s4 and afully rooted evo 4g thanks to the simple fact you existed to make my life a lot easier. with that being said, I have 3 issues

1 I had to go digging on xda for the native hotspot mod….it took hours. I wish you had of just listed it here LOL
because the native hotspot mod is with out a shadow of a doubt THE BEST and if at all the only reason to root your GS4. even after rooting seeing as wifi tether app sucks balls in terms of speed and accuracy. I’m actually posting this on my native hotspot now.

2 when i try to install lbe privacy guard my phone goes the hell and becomes non fuctional. crashes galore

3 problem to might be related to the fact the the kernal you listed to enable cwm mdl rooting method to work is extremely outdated and flawed. It would be nice to have a more stable/better stock kernal listen on your site.

    thanks again, you’re awesome,

    Max,

Since you’re the expert I’m in need of some help. I have the SCH-i545 and have rooted and installed HyperDrive ROM. My issue is that the phone keeps hanging up at the ‘custom’ screen showing the unlock and just stays there. I than have to boot to recovery, fix permissions, and it will boot normal.

No matter which custom ROM I flash I end up with issues where it won’t install certain apps like twitter or G+ saying invalid pkg file etc.

Long story, still waaaay too long, I want to go back to the unrooted stock ROM if possible but I have a Mac with the 2.66GHz XEON processors so you can’t use BootCamp to install Windows for ODIN.

Are there ANY possible instructions for how I can restore this thing to stock on my Mac by chance? Your help would be really appreciated.

max never replied to my initial post HOWEVER i would like everyone looking at this section to know that the newest touch wiz jelly bean rom kernel for the gs4 was released on xda’s website not too long ago and let me tell you, IT IS FLAWLESS. I couldnt be happier with this kernel. flash player mod is now working for me! the kernal max has listed on this website is ridiculously flawed. I know this is not his fault. HOWEVER, the purpose of this site is to keep new comers like myself, up to date on the status of root related topics. if you’re just going to leave up old info from may 2013 when it’s now august 2013 then whats the point…… any way, here’s a link to the latest stock rom kernel for sprint gs4.

    http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2260536

one last thing….if I had never went to the gs4 root page before going to the cwm root page I would have never known I needed a new kernel in the first place and would have most likely bricked my phone…..I read way too many comments where spring gs4 users were complaining that they were not establishing root using cwm recovery, and I beleive it’s because most of then didn’t install a custom kernel because they might have gone directly to the cwm page and never seen the gs4 root page. hope that made sense i will post linkts to help show what I am talking about

galaxy s4 root page showing link to (outdated) kernel needed for root using cwm method

    http://galaxys4root.com/galaxy-s4-root/how-to-root-galaxy-s4/

i WILL ALSO QUOTE FROM THIS LINK ABOVE

“”UPDATE: For those of you with T-Mobile’s latest UVUAMDL firmware or Sprint’s latest VPUAMDL firmware, this root method will not work. BUT, you can use CWM or TWRP method below along with kernel fix to root. (See Sprint Kernel fix and T-Mobile Kernel fix)”"

cwm method root page not explaining or showing any necessary kernel needed for sprint users.

see what i mean? if I were a random new root user, and i decided to to use cwm method, I would have never known to download a new kernel and I would fail at rooting my phone as so many others have done.

    Hello,
I am very new to doing these kind of things. I have the galaxy s4 and so far I’ve successfully rooted my phone and I have gotten the team win recovery project up and running as well. I have’nt found a rom yet that I like enough to flash so for now I want to stay on the stock firmware. I want to update to the latest stock firmware for my phone, which I’ve downloaded from your website.
I dont want to do this wrong of course. Can I use the twrp to install the firmware update?

    Thanks!

        Hey,

So I downloaded and flashed the file that you suggested successfully. Everything is working properly EXCEPT my music app. You the default music player that came on the phone? Every time I try to play a song it force closes and says “music app has stopped unexpectedly”
        Did I do something wrong?
After I installed the file I realized that the update brought back some of the apps that I uninstalled with Titanium back up. Apps like audible and amazon bookstore. The ones that came with the phone that I wouldn’t be using. I don’t think I would have uninstalled something I needed for my phone to function properly but I could be wrong.
Should I try to reinstall the update?

Someone please help me. I attempted to flash the stock firmware above in ODIN for my VZW GS4 (ME7) and it failed. Now i’m stuck on a screen that says “Firmware upgrade encountered an issue”. I can’t even get into Recovery Mode. Is there another stock firmware file available for the VZW GS4 that I can try? The one above seems to have put me out of comission.

    Please help! Thanks

    Hey Max,

I’ve been following these Galaxy domains since the S2 days, love your work!
My question today is would it be possible to perform a SIM network unlock using the workaround method in ServiceMode for a previous firmware version that AT&T patched up in the MF3 update?

So the Sprint MF9 Firmware is not listed anywhere on this site? I know it’s not a huge deal to install the older version, then update, but it seems like the MF9 stock ROM should be available for download somewhere, right? I was going to try to obtain it via Kies, but when I am asked for my serial number, I enter it (with the phone unplugged), and it says the number I’ve entered is incorrect? So, does anyone know where to find the stock MF9 complete package (recovery, rom, etc.)? Just wanting this to have on hand in the event of needing to take phone in for warranty…

    Reply
    1. Rob Man

You can use your recovery to restore your phone back to stock (what ever version had), then unroot; get the OTA updates to MF9. make a new backup, re-root then if you need it you will have it on hand.

I personally always thought that was too much trouble and figured as long as I went back to at least the version that it came with that the most they could do is raise and eyebrow and ask why I never updated it. At that point I would just tell them I don’t like doing OTA’s because of a bad experience in the past or some BS like that.

Most likely I will have an insurance claim before a warrantee…… around here we use “Bricks” for wheel chock’s.

Go to samfirware.com, you need the latest firmware from there. Put your phone model in (sph-l720) and mf9 firmware will show up. Try that

You can register for free. If your looking to get back to the latest sprint stock (no root, like if you’re buying a new phone) firmware (rom) then this is the best way to go. You also need odin to do this. Follow the directions in this website about going back to stock firmware. Does this help? It’s easy to register in samfirware.com also.

By the way the firmware that’s on this site is the original firmware when the phone came out in May. You’ll get the latest the way I explained.

Hi i have a question. I have an S4 with the new 4.2.2 MG1 update, when i try to unlock it using the “Service Menu” unlock method, using MG1 firmware it will NOT go to the service menu hence rendering the phone unlockable via the “free” way. I don’t want to buy an unlock code: So i want to downgrade the S4′s firmware to MDJ and unlock it via the Service Menu method. My question is, can i flash the above downloaded roms on the S4 using the Stock Recovery? (As i don’t want to raise the flash counter by using Odin and than voiding the warranty)

    1. Rob Man

As for the Flash(Binary) counter, It can be reset with Triangle Away. But you have to unroot anyway if you take it in for warranty.

What carrier? Start with finding the carrier and model of your S4. You can then follow the instructions for those. Your most of the stock firmware listed above have been updated since originally released.

Can you please update all firmware (especially sprint) to 4.3. I really need to unroot my s4.

Btw, if you have a rom like cyanogenmod and you unroot and factory reset your device, will the rom still be there ?because I want to go back to stock rom and start over

    Reply
    1. Jamie

Yes you actually have to flash a different firmware (ROM) to get rid of that ROM. Go here and sign up it’s free and you’ll get the exact firmware that is straight from samsung for sprint.

      http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/

Click join at the top right and then go through the steps. Then enter your device, model number in the search device here section (can’t miss it) and if it’s sprint then it’s SPH-L720. Choose the latest which is the L720VPUEMJA, pick the sprint one under the carrier section. Takes a little while to download you have three different selections to choose how you want to download, you’ll see. Then flash through odin. You can also look through xda-developers website and look through the forums and find some stock stuff there, but I found the samsung website to be the easiest. By the way you will lose root doing this and custom recovery, every thing will go back to completely stock, completely like you just bought the phone.

      Good luck!

I have fixed this issue before. You have to download the newest update zip fromhttp://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/. Join, it’s free, type in phone model number, download may take a bit depending on the download you choose. Then get back into download mode, use Odin and you should be good.

How long? It does a factory reset automatically, so it could take a minute to get past the initial boot after the install. Are you talking about the initial boot up?

The references to SamMobile for obtaining ROMs for the Galaxy S4 are really useless: it simply has links to TeraFile and RapidGator. TeraFile links to ROMs are gone, and the RapidGator links appear to be something that is not valid, plus they want you to pay to be a “premium” member (with no guarantee that you will get the file that you want).

Hello, I just seen the videos on Youtube on how to root, still not sure i feel confident to do so, but i will read again and maybe give it a try…. I got a small question, have you got any clean roms from Samsung, like complete stock, from no carrier? I am writting to you from Spain, Ive got a GT-9505 with ORANGE ESPANA, does this methods work the same for any mobile carrier, or does the US have a different system in place? Then last but not least, how do i backup my ROM form Orange so incase i want to revert i can? Thanks, sorry for the newbie qestions.

    Thanks

Once rooted you can just keep the ROM from your carrier and freeze or remove the parts you don’t like. This can be done using Titanium Backup. Always freeze the app or process before removing it to see what affect it has on the phone.

You will most likely want a ROM for your device and compatible with your carrier.

You will want to backup with Titanium Backup and make a backup with your recovery Clock Work Mod or TWRP.

Hello! I recently put Omni on my Sprint S4, went to return to stock with a one click odin option (stupidly). The one click option failed, with a firmware error message at boot. I was able to access CWM and install a custom ROM, now though my phone won’t send or receive calls no matter what ROM I install (even one’s that were previously working perfectly). Please help!! I love my s4, and would be happy to have it totally stock, I just don’t know how to get it there. None of the stock firmware links work. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks!

What model and carrier is your S4?

What ROM did you install? If it wasn’t a TouchWiz ROM you may need to install the correct GAPPS file.

If you did install GAPPS be sure you flash the ROM then Flash the GAPPS at the same time (No reboots between)

      I hope this helps.

    Hey guys,
I downloaded “Rogers Galaxy S4 SGH-I337M VLUAMDJ (Android 4.2.2) ” and it installed 4.2.2 like I wanted, but my wifi won’t turn on (when i press the switch it just says [turning on] where the networks are usually displayed and then nothing happens), whenever I play music the phone freezes up and lastly the firmware came with crap tons of BELL bloatware. I had omni rom 4.4.2 previously but i made the mistake of not backing up my 4.3 so now I’m here. I’d really appreiciate the help.

I have been trying to get info on how I can get my external sd card on my gs4 m919 to swap or combine with the internal storage can someone help? Also can’t find a good working wifi tethering to work either any thoughts? I don’t know if I want to stay on Touchwiz or use google play edition. I am leaning towards google play but I really like the stock camera on touchwiz anyway to have it ported? I really appreciate a response I know I have a lot of questions but I have been searching forums like XDA, your site, and others and have tried different apps and options but nothing has come out good in the end and that is why I am seeking answers for these questions.
