For this week’s Galaxy S4 GT-i9500 ROM of the week, check out MIUI ROM V5 Official.
Xiaomi, the company behind MIUI ROMs, have announced their official support for the GT-i9500 Galaxy S4 last week and released the first official MIUI ROM for the S4. Currently, MIUI ROM is also available for other S4 variants (such as AT&T/T-Mobile/Canadian/GT-i9505) but those are not official while the official version is based on official Samsung firmware with Samsung camera and support for IR Remote.
Honestly I admit GT-i9500 has not been the best Galaxy S4 model type for custom ROMs but the good news is that MIUI ROM is the only official ROM supported by Xiaomi.
Inside MIUI ROM you will find the usual MIUI stuff for those of you who are familiar with it. If you are new to MIUI, MIUI ROM brings you a tons of custom themes for free (according to CyanogenMod founder Steve Kondik, he’s jealous of MIUI ROMs theme engine) along with other free goodies you can download like wallpapers, ringtones, etc…etc… The amount of free themes/wallpapers/ringtones on MIUI ROMs simply amazing as there are literally hundreds to choose from and growing daily.
MIUI ROM also gives you a completely reworked/redesigned UI, some of you may love it and some of you may not. But, you can only find out by trying it so definitely give MIUI ROM a go this week(end) while you wait for Android 4.4 KitKat, which should also be coming by next week.
What is a Custom ROM?
A custom ROM is a custom, modified operating system that you can install on your Android device. Basically it's like installing Windows OS on a Macbook. By installing a custom ROM, you can bypass stock factory settings like locked hotspot tether, install new Android versions early, or even convert your phone into another OS.
With a custom ROM, you can really maximize the capabilities of your smartphone by adding custom features that have been developed by open source developers.
How to Install Custom ROMs
First, you will need to root your device, if it is not rooted yet, follow our root tutorial and root your phone.
Once rooted, you should have TWRP installed on your phone. Installation of a custom ROM is easy if you learn the basic of it. If you don't know how to install custom ROMs using TWRP recovery, see our tutorial on How to Install Custom ROM using TWRP!
