AOKP ROM for Galaxy S4! [Sprint SPH-L720/GT-i9505]

aokp-rom-galaxys4-sprint-gt-i9505

For those of you with Sprint SPH-L720 or GT-i9505 Galaxy S4, you are in luck as ported versions of AOKP ROM is available for each of your devices.

If you don’t know what AOKP ROM is, it’s an AOSP ROM (What is AOSP?) along with added UI customization and more.

Google has announced the launch of Galaxy S4 with pure Android OS, basically AOKP ROM is like that but with much more cool stuff.

If you want to know what AOKP ROM Control Settings can do, read up on our tutorial for that here.

By installing AOKP ROM, you will lose any Samsung TouchWiz features like Smart Scroll, Air Gestures, and even IR remote control capabilities as this is an AOSP ROM. (It may be supported in the future although not guaranteed)

I know many of you who don’t like TouchWiz and want to run pure Android OS. If you are one of those people, definitely this is the custom ROM for you.

Otherwise, you can also make a backup of your current ROM using CWM or TWRP recovery and try it out.

For those of you flasholics, give this AOKP ROM a try this week(end) and do let me know how it works out for you!

Does this ROM incorporate native Tethering & Portable Hotspot? Or do I need to do the MDC Sprint Wifi Tether Mod De-odex thing?

You might have to flash an AOSP kernel for i337M, but I don’t believe there exists one yet…

          Hi Salin,
Can you verify that this will work perfect on a Rogers branded S4? I have heard the modem for wireless and/or WIFI wont work!
          Thanks Martin

            Hi Martin,

I flashed it on my Rogers S4 and it worked perfect. There was no problem for modem. Just put the rogers apn settings, if needed. Should you have problem with wifi just re-install.

Do make a backup of your current ROM for sure though.

            Gud day :-)

                Martin,

The problem you had is that you didnt factory reset (wipe data/factory reset) your phone. Even some ROMs dont specify it, every time you flash a rom do a factory reset.

    Hi,
have a rooted stock GT-I9505 with TWRP recovery, rooted following instructions on this site, which worked fine. Did full wipe and tried to flash this ROM but it FAILED so I had to restore backup.

    Thoughts?

Hi Mark, I used PhilZ Touch CWM recovery. Philz_touch_5.03.7-i9505.zip Don’t know if it’s worth the hassle.

Hi Francis, PhilZ Touch recovery is actually CWM based. The best part is PhilZ recovery zip is available. So you can just flash it from Twrp. I was on Rogers stock with Philz_touch_5.03.7-i9505.zip recovery.

I’ve tried that so now I have philz cwm as my recovery, but the rom still won’t install. :(
Think I’ll just wait for a few more devs to bring out roms to try.

        thanks folks.

Any idea on how to adjust the backlight timeout for the menu and back keys? I like mine off all the time.

This doesnt work for me. I get “failed” message at the install. Tried it twice now, still won’t work. Had to restore it to my backup and clear cache/dalvik. Any ideas? I used TWRP method, and I have a gt-19505. Please help :)

Also, now i’m stuck at the SAMSUNG screen when booting! Somehow my phone got unrooted when restoring it. It asked me to install Supersu to get my phone rooted again, I pressed yes and then the phone rebooted and it got stuck at the samsung logo. I couldnt boot in “recovery mode” and the root was just gone. Rooted it it CWM method instead and cleared cache etc but still I can’t boot it :(

Got that idea right after posting :) I’m on it now, we’ll see if that works! Any ideas on why the ROM wont work?

Ok, well it’s back to stock now. I have no idea why it fail every time. Perhaps I should try the ROM with CWM root instead? Cause it wasn’t available with gt-19505 b4.

                Hey victor.

ye .. im thinking the same. I think CWM will allow it to work fine.
im currently using twrp. (Not a big fan) any idea how I can get rid of it and get CWM going? I tried flashing CWM over it but it just made my phone freeze at samsung logo. Good thing I did a backup lol

I dont know if this is related, but i had exactly the same problem flashing a 4.3 rom(Echoe rom or something like that). Maybe the problem is on 4.3 rather than on AOKP.

        1. Viktor

One question though! Google play don’t appear in the “apps” section. Do I have to flash it through CWM recovery? or is there another way?

I didnt forget , did it right after the ROM! It said the install was done then I rebooted. I meant to type “is it possible to flash it through CWM AGAIN”? Lol, after I installed the rom. Sorry for that

Glad that everything worked for you… If re-flashing gapps does not works, I would simply download playstore apk and install it, like any other software. Good night

flashed philz cwm recovery from twrp and did a fresh full backup. That worked fine. AOKP rom still fails to install and a restore is necessary. Looking at other comments it seems there are a growing number of gt-i9505 owners having the same problem.

At least now I have philz recovery :)

Anyone tied the ODIN method on gt-i9505?

      Hi mark.

Did you have to flash stock firmware first or did you just go straight from TWRP to philz?
….. coz I went straight from TWRP to CWM and got me stuck at boot loop. Luckily I had backup =D

I installed philz zip from twrp. no problems. I’ve tried three times using philz recovery to install the aokp rom but still fails. thank heavens for backups!

Haven’t tried installing the rom via odin yet.

replaces the recovery. once install finished i had to pull battery then use vol up + home + power to get in to the new recovery (which makes sense).

if you’re worried use odin to flash philz rcovery you’ll need to download the tar instead of the zip).

I honestly never tried philz. But I definitely prefer CWM over TWRP. How does philz compare to CWM? Better?

philz is essentially cwm with extra bells and whistles such as colours and other tweaks. it seems pretty cool. I was a long time cwm user on my old htc desire then my galaxy nexus, but changed to twrp on my nexus just to try it out because I liked goo manager and it managed my rabid desire for custom roms very well. I rate both pretty equal to be honest. I only tried philz because of a suggestion in this post’s responses that it MAY let me install the aokp rom. It didnt, but I will stick with philz for a while now I think.

Yes it will. I had some trouble with installing this rom with TWRP, you should try CWM recovery, that worked out for me :)

I’m having an issue with this ROM and CM 10 recognizing my external SD. The installs go smoothly but when I boot the phone the it says the SD is in the incorrect format and asks if I want to format it. I have a bunch of data including pictures and my Titanium Backup data so I obviously don’t want to format. I had a Droid Bionic and I flashed ROMs constantly on that device, never had this issue though. Thoughts?

I’ve had my Sprint S4 for about 3 weeks now and I was waiting to put a pure android rom on it. I did that yesterday and I’m quite disappointed. The 4G doesn’t work (in fact my over mobile internet is going whacko), the GPS doesn’t work, there is no stock audio/video player and I liked the camera app & functions better on the stock samsung rom. I actually like TouchWiz and will be going back to stock sprint/samsung rom soon. Not a good trade off for losing all that garbage sprint/samsung bloatware for me. My 2 cents…
