For this week’s ROM of the week for AT&T, T-Mobile, Canadian, and GT-i9505, check out BobCat ROM.
Based on GT-i9505 firmware, BobCat ROM brings you a custom theme with lots of customization.
UPDATE: BobCat ROM version 5.1 is OUT, CLICK HERE to see it instead of this!!!
First, BobCat ROM gives you native hotspot tethering (since all GT-i9505 ROMs support this out of the box) and I had not trouble using it on T-Mobile without any tinkering (and also 4G LTE working fine). Also you will be able to easily move your favorite apps to SD card since this ROM comes with firmware that supports the latest App2SD by Samsung.
Second, you will find a load of add-ons/MODs through its UpdateMe ROM app found in Settings allowing you to download the removed bloatware, install 3MINIT framework (for additional UI mods), change dropdown graphics (default is blue Android Andy guy), install new apps, and lots more.
Third, BobCat ROM brings you UI customization through Nottach app, which allows you to customize everything from status bar, battery icons, lockscreen, and even enable Volume-up flashlight when screen is off. (You can also get this app separately for most S4 custom ROMs btw, see here.)
What is a Custom ROM?
A custom ROM is a custom, modified operating system that you can install on your Android device. Basically it's like installing Windows OS on a Macbook. By installing a custom ROM, you can bypass stock factory settings like locked hotspot tether, install new Android versions early, or even convert your phone into another OS.
With a custom ROM, you can really maximize the capabilities of your smartphone by adding custom features that have been developed by open source developers.
How to Install Custom ROMs
First, you will need to root your device, if it is not rooted yet, follow our root tutorial and root your phone.
Once rooted, you should have TWRP installed on your phone. Installation of a custom ROM is easy if you learn the basic of it. If you don't know how to install custom ROMs using TWRP recovery, see our tutorial on How to Install Custom ROM using TWRP!
