For this week’s AOSP ROM of the Week (What is AOSP?), check out Carbon ROM based on Android 4.3.

What is Carbon ROM?

Carbon ROM is a custom AOSP ROM with lots of UI customization and tools to run your ROM efficiently.  Similar to AOKP ROM, Carbon ROM provides its own ROM Control-like customization through “Carbon Fibers” in Settings to allow the user to fully customize the ROM to their liking.

The latest version of Carbon ROM I’ve tried also has some excellent performance/battery life out of the box, you will not be disappointed if you need some more speed/battery life out of your S4.

Camera is also working great out of the box, you get Android 4.3 camera and Focal camera.  You can get PhotoSphere working also by simply installing the Android 4.3 PhotoSphere APK.

Overall, Carbon ROM has a nice mix of features and performance so if you are looking for a good, stable Android 4.3 ROM, try Carbon ROM this week(end) and do let me know what you think!

I want to try flashing this ROM, but I need to know if you can still use the IR blaster on this ROM and/or the Galxaxy S View cover? I just want to know how much I can actually get out of it.

NFC not working? It’s checked but greyed out, and android beam verifies that it isn’t working. Just updated to 0906 and “swype” actions on keyboard only input the previous or suggested word, or nothing at all. Sprint GS4.

Running on sph-l720 and running very fast and efficient best battery out of any ROM I have used so far. Only thing having issue with is the motion controls to navigate through web pages and the photosphere apk will not be installed but other than that solid rom

Hi Max or any others. I have the i337m and tried flashing using the the Canadian Rom as suggested above and it came up as failed. I followed the instructions. Anybody have any suggestions or is that the incorrect Rom for the phone? Thanks

Just flashed this ROM today on T-Mobile S4 and it works perfectly! I have not noticed anything wrong with it yet so far. I love the customization options of the UI.

I noticed that you linked to the nightly build, I just wanted to let everyone know for my sprint galaxy s4 I tried another nightly and the release build and it gave me many bugs. Version linked worked great though, so re-installed that havent had any problems.

I installed his RO and loved it. After a couple days of using it; I started getting a UID mismatch error on reboot. The fix was suppose to be to wipe data, did that and still no luck.
Some apps would not restore from Titanium Backup pro and the missing one’s would give me an installation error when I tried to install them manually.

I completly wiped and reinstalled Carbon ROM and gapps 4.3 again but continued with the same issues so,
Im going back to Tri Force for now.

Also, the cameras are both flakey.
I would get the notification when there was an update to the ROM however, it wanted to jack with my CWM recovery. I wasn’t too crazy about that because I didn’t want to take a chance that it would screw up all my backup data or make it unusable.
I usually install ROMs only on the weekend because I rely my cell for work but this one fooled me, it worked great almost all weekend then took a sh!t

For UID mismatch error, try “Fix Permission” from recovery. I had the same issue after loading different ROM and TWRP fix permission worked for me.
Give it try, it wont harm anything for sure. Good luck!!

Well, I decided to give it another try after installing TriForce ROM again. I like both ROMs so Im giving it another try.
I first installed a nightly that Goomanager pulled down and it was miserable. It took hours to update G+ alone over WiFi so, I went to this version again. It is working for now with no UID errors or Error -24 when I install apps. It did give me a little trouble with Titanium Backup restoring a batch backup. I worked that out and so far, so good.

But has anyone found a fix for NFC not working?

Ok, Im still running Carbon ROM and love it.
I just got brave enough to flash 9/23 nightly.
It was a little sketchy the first try but I was able to reflash it with gapps 4.3 the second time and it it working great.
They even fixed the NFC issue.
FYI, you cannot update via Goo if you are running CWM recovery. I installed TWRP(Goo will do it for you).
I did not try installing the nightly with CWM just because Goo would install TWRP for me without having to do it manually.

how did you get it to flash when i try to access the menu the phone says cant boot normal & dont turn off downloading whatever and ive tried goo manager with no luck

I first installed the ROM from the link on here, that installed gooManager, Goo notified me there was an update to the ROM, I then downloaded it (the nightly 9/23) with Goo. Then I selected Flash ROM from Goo. I then chose the downloaded ROM. It then said it needs a Open Script recovery to instal (CWM is not) so I selected to let Goo find one for me. It downloaded and installed TWRP.
It then booted in TWRP recovery, I went through it, Installed the updated ROM and the gapps.zip from the link on here that was already on my phone.
During the updated flash process I only cleared cache and Dalvik. I did not Wipe data since I was not installing a brand new ROM. It’s you preference weather to or not, but Im certianly not going to go through restoring everything if I don’t need to….
Good Luck I hope this helps.

You need to back up and look at the [bootstrap] method until (if) they get the bootloader unlocked but you can install a customer ROM that way.

i have goo manager & rom manager all of that, i tried to use odin and i get a failed window. i tried to unroot it same thing, when i use goomanager it wont install the updates or any updates for that matter. i have att version so does that mean i wont be able to put any custom rom on the phone. ive even tried to manually through goomanager reboot into recovery mode but to no avail for what ever reason it wont allow me to write to the boot section. what do i do thanks

I just downloaded the rom a few days ago and installed it on my s4. I am by no means an android expert, i’ve done some initial testing everything works fine, but when i go to reboot the phone. it just hangs so i’ll have to power it off and then turn it back on
