GPE ROM for Galaxy S4! [Android 4.4.4]

gpe-rom-galaxys4-android4.4.4

For this week’s Galaxy S4 ROM of the Week, check out GPE ROM(Google Play Edition ROM), available for AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, and GT-i9505.  (But does not work on AT&T or Verizon users with locked bootloaders/SafeStrap sorry!)

Based on the latest Google Play Edition Android 4.4.4, GPE ROM brings you truly stable stock Android experience on your Galaxy S4.

For those of you who don’t know, Samsung sold “Google Play Edition” Galaxy S4, which comes with its own Google Play Edition firmware, basically built like Nexus phones to give you pure Google experience.  With this GPE ROM, you can expect more stability than AOSP custom ROMs and no bugs.

This is great ROM for those of you who want to experience what pure Google OS is really like.  It does not have any customization that AOSP ROMs bring but you can expect some great stability.  Performance is nearly identical to AOSP ROMs in my testings, although I do see AOSP ROMs a bit faster, especially those that are overclocked.

Personally, this isn’t a ROM for me as I like to customize my phone but if you are looking for pure Google experience, definitely check out GPE ROM for your Galaxy S4 and do let me know what you think!

What is a Custom ROM?

A custom ROM is a custom, modified operating system that you can install on your Android device. Basically it's like installing Windows OS on a Macbook. By installing a custom ROM, you can bypass stock factory settings like locked hotspot tether, install new Android versions early, or even convert your phone into another OS.

With a custom ROM, you can really maximize the capabilities of your smartphone by adding custom features that have been developed by open source developers.

How to Install Custom ROMs

First, you will need to root your device, if it is not rooted yet, follow our root tutorial and root your phone.

Once rooted, you should have TWRP installed on your phone. Installation of a custom ROM is easy if you learn the basic of it. If you don't know how to install custom ROMs using TWRP recovery, see our tutorial on How to Install Custom ROM using TWRP!

Trying to install on my sprint s4. Coming back failed every time. Any suggestions

  4. SevenNukes says:

This worked, however in the About Phone the model listed is GT-I9505G instead of SGH-M919 (Tmobile). Is this normal?

  5. Ralph says:

Been using Jamahl’s 4.4.3 and now 4.4.4, for some reason the proximity sensor seems borked, i.e. when answering a call the screen goes blank and there’s no way to hang up except plugging in headphones (screen comes back on).
    Anyone else experiencing this ?

Hi Max, installed this rom the other day on my phone. But now my phone won’t read the sim card at all, no mobile network, no LTE etc etc. I tried the method you described manually setting the APN and all that, but it still doesn’t work. Do you have any advice on how to resolve this issue?

    • Max Lee says:

Oh something went hairy I think, try restoring your previous ROM first. Once SIM is working, you can try reinstall ROM.

Hi, first off, thanks for your very informative videos.

Will this ROM work for the Rogers Samsung Galaxy S4 I337M version?

    • Max Lee says:

      Yes if does!

      • J says:

I am getting a status 7 error using CWM when attempting to flash. I can workaround by editing the updater script to remove the assert, but want to make sure this is typical.

Device is Bell Canada S4 I337M.
This is the ROM I downloaded: danvdh-GE-4.4.4-07172014-INT

  9. Mike says:

I followed your instructions, but every time I get to the point of installing this ROM, it gives me a Status 7 error. Do you know why this is happening? I am using the most up to date version of CWM and am rooted.

    Thanks.

    • Alvaro Martínez says:

      I had the same issue,
after some research I found that this is a bug with CWM, that it thinks that the rom is not compatible with your device, this is a security measure, you have to be careful to make sure that your device is listed on the supported devices. I hade this issue on a i337m from the Mexican carrier Telcel. Install TWRP recovery, this one doesn’t have that security measure, but really make sure that your device is supported although you will end with a bricked device

  10. Bobby says:

    Max,

I love the ROM… Just one issue. My sprint data keeps going off after long periods of non use during the day. Which in turn I have to reboot the phone to get the data to come back on. Any thoughts?

  11. wrxuglee says:

so what radio gets installed with this ROM?

  12. Monty says:

Hey Max or anybody else out there that may be able to help. Im trying to flash the GPE 4.4.4 to my sprint GS4 rooted of course, and I’m getting to red error messages in recovery while flashing ROM 1. Footers wrong and 2. Signature not verified and then it reboots back to the stock firmware. Any help would be great or another recommendation for a faster ROM. I play a lot of Game of War on my phone and have spent thousands of dollars on the game growing and I have terrible lag which in turn is not very favorful for me while playing the game and it only seems to do it in that app. Thanks in advance.

  13. It’s a battery hog with some apps (Chrome and Messenger, in my particular case), something that wasn’t happen with the 4.4.2 stock rom.

  14. Bill says:

Tried installing on sch-i545 (Verizon) – would not boot, said kernel was not authorized by Verizon.

Currently running 4.4.2 GPE ROM, which works well but is not rooted on my phone (/system/xbin/su is installed, but does not seem to shift to root…)

I’d love to have a rooted GPE Verizon S4, but I’m running out of ideas.

  15. kane says:

Installed ROM but when screen goes to sleep I loose signal and have to manually register network is there a easy fix ?

  16. fer says:

    Hi , the rom works with my at&t S4 , 4.4.2 (I337UCUFNB1)?

  17. Joey says:

I have the Verizon SCH-i595. From reading your site here, I see that I cannot use the CWM method to root, so I used towel root instead. Is this a correct assumption? And, if so, my main question is how do I make a backup of my stock ROM after rooting with towel root since I don’t see where towel root created any new options on the boot options screen for backup like CWM does in your screen shots and video above.

  18. Rey says:

When a GPE Lollipop is available, will I be able to update via OTA or do I need to refresh. I am wondering if I should flash now or wait until there is a lollipop version.

  19. nye says:

    Does this aupprt IR?

  20. Rodrigo says:

    yep, it supports IR.

    • DB says:

I do have a Galaxy S4 GT-I9505G and it was with stock android 4.4.2 from Samfirmware and everything worked including IR. Wanted an ultra minimalist 4.4.4 ROM and tried a couple and this seems best. Installed it and great part of of the things worked as expected 🙂 and that is good enough for me. I am missing just one thing the IR (Infra red) to control TV, AC etc.. is there a way how I can add IR functionality to be used with the app ASmart Remote on this ROM?
Thank you for this web site and for all those who contribute.

  21. Jeff Kim says:

Is that rom upgradable to android 5.0 Lollipop?

  22. Jordan says:

tried the OTA update and it failed to the 5.0 unless there’s any other suggestions I don’t think the OTA works

  23. Jason says:

If I download the update to lollipop after flashing this ROM, will it update without issues? I tried it once and the phone didnt take the update.

  24. Haim says:

I wonder if I can load the ROM on my ATT SGH-i337, 4.4.2, kernel version 3.4.0-2539008, baseband I337UCUFNI1, rooted with NC1 and NI1, if not, what should I do before? I appreciate your reply

  25. Conner says:

There seems to be a minor glitch. When I scroll between pages on the home screen, sometimes it skips a page.

  26. Liam says:

This would be great but the website that you’re supposed to use to download the Canadian one doesn’t even download its just a slew of ads saying DOWNLOAD here and doesn’t give you the actual file.

  27. luis says:
