For this week’s Galaxy S4 ROM of the week, check out Omni ROM with Android 4.4.2, available for AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, GT-i9505, and Canadian Galaxy S4 users.
Based on latest Android 4.4.2, Omni ROM brings you the best and latest Android plus some customization you can do including screen recording, one of the major features of Omni ROM. (You can already do it with screen recording apps but this one is integrated into the ROM.) Of course, Android 4.3/4.3.1 custom ROMs still feature more customization than Android 4.4 KitKat ROMs and if you need a lot of customization, we suggest you to look for older 4.3 Jelly Bean ROMs.
Omni ROM now offers notification count, network speed indicator, and network activity indicator for customizing your status bar. Also screenshot and screen recording can be enabled for your power menu.
There’s still a lot of work that’s being put into Omni ROM and this is probably the tip of the iceberg. If you are looking for a good, stable Android 4.4.2 ROM, definitely check out Omni ROM as everything works out of the box and we should have some custom kernels coming soon so you can overclock. So, check it out for this week(end) and do let me know what you think!
To install, reboot into recovery, make backup ROM, wipe data/factory reset, install ROM, install Gapps, and reboot. (If for some reason you end up in a bootloop, reboot into recovery, go to Advanced Wipe for TWRP or Mounts & Storage for CWM, format/wipe /system, then re-install ROM.)
You may have to use CWM 126.96.36.199 or higher for installing all Android 4.4 KitKat ROMs. (Also you can use TWRP v188.8.131.52 or higher) If having trouble with installation, use ROM Manager to update or grab CWM Recovery ZIP here you can flash with your existing custom recovery. (No update needed for Loki recovery on ATT/Verizon, I was able to install fine. Not sure on Safestrap, I am testing it right now should have results soon.)
Download Flash Player APK (if you want flash player use with Dolphin browser)
DownloadAndroid PhotoSphere (if you want photosphere, but may force close so make a backup of your Gallery app using Titanium Backup app before installing! )
If you want PIE Controls, see our LMT Pie Control guide.
If you want some awesome audio, check out Viper4Audio FX MOD, which you can install on this ROM to enhance your music 100%. (Works fine on Android 4.4 tested on this ROM.)
What is a Custom ROM?
A custom ROM is a custom, modified operating system that you can install on your Android device. Basically it's like installing Windows OS on a Macbook. By installing a custom ROM, you can bypass stock factory settings like locked hotspot tether, install new Android versions early, or even convert your phone into another OS.
With a custom ROM, you can really maximize the capabilities of your smartphone by adding custom features that have been developed by open source developers.
How to Install Custom ROMs
First, you will need to root your device, if it is not rooted yet, follow our root tutorial and root your phone.
Once rooted, you should have TWRP installed on your phone. Installation of a custom ROM is easy if you learn the basic of it. If you don't know how to install custom ROMs using TWRP recovery, see our tutorial on How to Install Custom ROM using TWRP!
