Virgin Google Play Edition ROM for Galaxy S4! [AT&T/T-Mobile/Canadian/GT-i9505]

virgin-googleplayedition-rom-galaxys4

I know many of you have been asking me for a good Google Play Edition ROM for the Galaxy S4.  Well, if you own an AT&T SGH-i337, T-Mobile SGH-M919, Canadian SGH-i337M, or GT-i9505 S4, check out Virgin Google Play Edition ROM.

Virgin Google Play Edition ROM is built off Google Play Edition sources with features like Google Wallet working out of the box (no fiddling required), stock AOSP browser added (so you can easily add Flash Player), and custom reboot menu including hot boot (for quick reboots).  Also, wifi tether works out of box (except T-mobile).

I find the Virgin ROM pretty solid out of the box, even includes an optimized stock kernel by renowned XDA developer Faux123 for better performance and battery life.  I’ve actually tested this ROM over my vacation in LA last whole week and this is probably one of the best Google Play Edition ROMs I’ve tried and boy it’s FAST.

So, if you are looking for the best custom ROM that will turn your Galaxy S4 into full Google Play Edition S4 plus some additives you will not want to miss out on, check out Virgin ROM this week(end) and do let me know what you think!

Note: As for Verizon, I have tried many different builds but none of them have camera and networking flawless as this Virgin ROM, but I will have an update when I find one (and don’t hesitate to suggest one in the comments below if you find one first). For Sprint, check out the Google Play Edition ROM for Sprint Galaxy S4.

Download Virgin Google Play Edition ROM for Galaxy S4 (For all AT&T/T-Mobile/Canadian/GT-i9505)

To install, reboot into recovery, make a backup ROM wipe data/factory reset, install ROM, and reboot.

For AT&T, I didn’t install loki_doki.zip and booted up fine so just a basic install should work fine.

For general installation tutorial, see our custom ROM installation guide.

Hey max, i just recieved my at&t i337 yesterday and i want to turn it to a GPE phone. I have no experience at all when it comes to root and custom roms. Would you recommend this rom for daily use? Thanks!

hey bud i recommend you make a backup of your current rom and play a little there is definative way to say your will a hundred percent like…. but most of the roms recommended in this site a fairly safe to use. Max usually makes really good reviews.

Thanks! I installed it and so far so good. I kinda miss air gestures and multi window but over all it is a way better experience than touchwiz.

I love Stock Android Roms due to their speed but i wouldn’t like to lose Samsung Camera features. Is there any way to regain or keep Samsung camera? For this was one of the reasons I bought this phone.

AT&T GS4, flashed Virgin, LTE won’t work at all now. Tried *#*#4636#*#* and set to LTE/GSM auto (PRL), keeps going back to WCDMA preferred. Any suggestions?

Fixed it! Copied APN settings off of wife’s AT&T Galaxy S3. Then went back to *#*#4636#*#* and set to LTE/GSM auto (PRL) and it worked like a champ the first time. Anyone needing help with the AT&T LTE / APN settings, I’ll be happy to help… write me at strikepackagezulu@gmail.com and I’ll get back with you as soon as I can.

Wait, choose no? Huh. That explains a lot. I thought cwm was asking to ‘fix’ it meaning it would keep you from losing root.

Hi. I just installed this Virgin Google Play ROM. Everything looks like working ok, except for led notifications. Do you know how can I enable this?
    Thank you!

Omar, they’re called Pulse Notification Light.

BTW, First time Android user…First time rooting… first time installing ROMS… first time of everything. Easy peezy.

Working on an Unlocked Canadian Samsung Galaxy S4 i337M (Rogers/Fido/Bell/Telus) LTE worked out of the bat using a Fido SIM. No need to tinker around with it.

External SD permissions are also fixed in this ROM. It’s ROCK SOLID.

      Awesome find Mod!

I just installed the rom and everything is working fine, there’s only one little thing, I can’t connect to to my dual band router on the 5 gigahertz band only the 2.5 anyone has this problem, I have the tmobile galaxy s4

During initial setup, when I tried to connect to my 5Ghz band, it wouldn’t connect either. It eventually displayed a blank white screen under the “Connecting…”, but I had to cancel and choose the 2.4Ghz band. If anyone figures out a fix, please post.

How do I check to see if I have MF3 firmware? I don’t see anything obvious in the About Device section of the settings menu. I’m afraid to try to root it without knowing the firmware version.

I had to flash loki doki for the rom to work. also got the “lose flash recovery if i reboot option” using clockwork.

I have been hesitant to install custom ROMS on my S4, simply out of paranoia, but this went relatively smoothly. The only issue is that occasionally TWRP freezes on the Teamwin logo screen. I have to remove the battery and boot into recovery a 2nd time to get it to work.

I live in an apartment complex, plus there are a lot of wireless devices in my house, so I’m hoping to figure out the 5Ghz band issue soon. I can see it, I just can’t connect to it.

I will miss the Samsung camera, mostly because I was so used to it.

I don’t remember Google installing all my apps again automatically after a wipe. Is that unique to this ROM, or has Android being doing that for awhile?

Just flashed the Virgin Google Play Edition ROM on my GT-I9505, and I have to manually unlock SIM-card at every boot/restart.
I’ve also tried flashing the 4.3 GE ROM Finaly from XDA developer Jamal2367…with exactly same result.

Maybe it’s a noob question….but is that normal with the GE 4.3 ROM’s….and is there a way to bypass/disable it.

    Hey,
FYI, I have the ATT version and had to install loki. I was stupid and said YES at : ROM may flash stock recovery on boot… So know I lost root privileges. Any help??? THanks

Got it! Just restored to a previous ROM that I knew was rooted then reinstalled making sure to say NO! when I got the message about: ROM may flash stock recoveryon boot etc… Everything working fine now. Checked SuperU and root is good.
One thing though, there is no toggle for volume/vibrate in the Notification drawer. Kind of annoying, I’m listeing to music on headphones and enter a place where I need to silence my phone and there’s no way to do this except going thru settings and do it manually. Maybe I’m missing something but I’ve checked just about everywhere to see if I could edit the Notification Drawer and add a volume/vibrate toggle.

Do you have a backup of any ROM where you had root access? If you do, restore back to that ROM. Check that you have root (SuperU, or Titanium Backup will let you know right away if have root or not). Now, reinstall the new ROM (I’m assuming it’s the Virgin Google Play Edition) do everything exactly the tutorial shows. Note: “I have ATT and I had to install loki.doki after installing the ROM in order for it to work, I know this contradicts what he said in the video but that was my experience. The key thing is that when you go to Reboot you’ll get a message saying something like: ROM may flash stock recovery on boot… Fix? Answer “NO” . Your device should restart and everything should work. This happened to me today and doing this fixed it in no time. I hope this helps!

However, just today my mobile data stopped working. I can still take calls and send texts but I cant access the glorious interwebs.

Tried reboot of the phone, network, etc.. no success.

    Any ideas?

What would happen or would you even be able to install Virgin Rom which is 4.3 and install a Mod only features version of a Rom like the Foxhound with Aroma installer? Is this possible or is it a bad idea or whats your thoughts? Thank you Max and everyone else that helps out.

      Bump this.

I have the AT&T i337 s4 and on 4.2.2. Rooted and bootloader unlocked. And used goo manager to flash this rom “Virgin Google Play Edition 4.3″. Flash was successful, but when my phone booted back up it led to a screen saying something about AT&T unapproved system update found or something along those lines. And it wouldnt get off that screen unless I booted back into recovery.

      HELP PLEASE.

Hey there is a guy on here who commented about the same probably and found out a way to get LTE back up and running, has to do something with the APN. Just look for him in the earlier comments and email him and he’ll give you step by step directions. I did this update and my LTE wasn’t working and messaged him and he gave me instructions and now my LTE is up and running.

I got the update as well and when I tried to update, it rebooted into TWRP recovery mode and the installation failed.

I don’t know if I’ll get the update notification again since the recovery failed? Otherwise I’d like to know if we should update.

          Thanks!

This rom is great, I hope it gets better with time, It would be nice to see more customization, I installed SetCpu and gives me very good battery life. This is one of the best roms I have ever used, I am an aosp lover and this is the closest thing to perfection.

Hi, I just installed this ROM to my samsung galaxy s4 GT-i9505.
I got a strange problem at the time toolbar.
The time is not updated every minute so for example it will stuck at 10.05
Then if I go to date and time settings and change any settings there (set default GMT or anything) it the will updated.
    Then it stuck again.
So any solutions to resolve this problem?
    Thanks.

Can this work on Telus? I’ve tried this ROM and everything works except the CSC changes to Bell and I can’t use my data plan. So in other words 4G isn’t working nor LTE. I’ve tried copying APN settings without luck though. If anyone knows a way to get Google Edition ROM working on a Telus S4 please let me know, I really dig the simplicity of the ROM.

Hi I installed this ROM and I’ve been having problems with battery life. Well for all GPE Roms it seems like the battery life on it drains 1% every minute. I’m on att mf3 rooted safestrap. My stock tw ROM the battery was good but now I’m on vision-x and the battery life and performance is excellent. I love tw but I’d like to have a more android feel to my phone with great battery life and performance. The thing that’s draining most is the android system. I tried using better battery stats to pinpoint the problem but I couldn’t find it. Activitymanager-launcher? Audio_out2 and several more things. Its been a headache trying to find the files.

Try an app from the Play Store called Wakelock Detector. I would also suggest trying another kernel, but don’t, considering all this risky bootloader business. A reinstall of the ROM may also help

This ROM is very fast and fluid, and seems to work well. EXCEPT:

After about a day’s use, the battery graph crashes the settings app every time i try to get a detailed look at power usage. This has been the case with every Google Play Edition ROM i’ve used for my AT&T SGH-I337.

It’s a small issue, but enough to make me want to uninstall this.

I just rooted my AT&T Galaxy s4 SGH-I337 with mf3 firmware and installed CWM using safestrap. I see mixed reviews of this Rom as well as any other. I want a pure Android experience. Is it really safe and worth risk? I’ve rooted/rommed several other Android devices in the past. This is the first time I’ve used safestrap. Am I better off waiting for a legitimate recovery file?

I keep getting a Google Edition 4.3 update notification for Virgin Google Edition 4.3. I get an error message when trying to install it. Please advise how to go about updating and installing the 16MB file. I would appreciate some info on 4.4 KitKat and when/if Virgin will release a 4.4 version.

I have the Virgin Google Play ROM featuring Android 4.3 installed (T-Mobile SGH-M919). Pretty much rock-solid. I’ve been using it exclusively since August now (first 4.2 then 4.3 version):

I see that this ROM is now available with 4.4 KitKat. However, I’m getting an OTA notification that 4.4 KitKat is downloaded and ready to install. My gut tells me that since I’m using a ROM, this OTA update will not work for me. I’m hesitant to download the new ROM because of some of the sound and data issues people are reporting on T-Mobile phones.

Has anyone else been brave enough to install the 4.4 OTA update on the 4.3 version of this ROM?

What size is the Ext SD card? Because it might be the format. If it is a 64GB card then it is probably ExFAT format making it most likely not compatible with the KERNEL of the ROM. If this is the case then just reformat the SD card to FAT32. Sure you sacrifice having files on the card being 4 GB and smaller but it will work with the ROM this way.

Is there a GPE Kit Kat ROM available yet? You’ll post when it becomes available?

I’ve been reluctant to try the other Kit Kat ROM’s since this Virgin GPE ROM has been so good so far (other than the annoying system update that keeps trying to install).
