For this week’s ROM of the week on the Verizon Galaxy S4 SCH-i545, check out Eclipse ROM.
Built from ground up, the Eclipse ROM is compiled by the same developer who developed the Eclipse S4 ROM (which is an excellent ROM btw), bringing you the pureness and goodness of Android 4.3 in its truest form ever.
What I like about XDA user Nitroglycerine33’s builds is the fact that every custom ROM he’s built has always been pretty, darn stable. And this Eclipse ROM is also a very good one providing you the latest Android 4.3 with couple minor tweaks including DSP Manager, theme engine, screenshot/reboot options, modded AOSP camera with support for volume/power button shutters, and even some UI customization for battery and status bar.
This isn’t a full-featured ROM like AOKP but the performance, stability, and battery life is amazing. If you are looking for a very good alternative to the Google Play Edition ROM with everything working out of the box, definitely check out the Eclipse ROM this week(end) and do let me know what you think!
To install, reboot into recovery, make a backup ROM, wipe data/factory reset, install ROM, install Gapps, and reboot.
What is a Custom ROM?
A custom ROM is a custom, modified operating system that you can install on your Android device. Basically it's like installing Windows OS on a Macbook. By installing a custom ROM, you can bypass stock factory settings like locked hotspot tether, install new Android versions early, or even convert your phone into another OS.
With a custom ROM, you can really maximize the capabilities of your smartphone by adding custom features that have been developed by open source developers.
How to Install Custom ROMs
First, you will need to root your device, if it is not rooted yet, follow our root tutorial and root your phone.
Once rooted, you should have TWRP installed on your phone. Installation of a custom ROM is easy if you learn the basic of it. If you don't know how to install custom ROMs using TWRP recovery, see our tutorial on How to Install Custom ROM using TWRP!
