For this week’s Verizon Galaxy S4 ROM of the week, check out Eclipse S4 ROM by XDA recognized developer Nitroglycerine33.
If you are looking for TouchWiz stock stability with AOSP look, Eclipse S4 ROM is definitely the ROM for you. It’s a “hybrid” ROM that gives you the best of TouchWiz and AOSP.
I’ve used many of Nitroglycerine33 ROMs on other phones and his ROMs are very solid while giving you AOSP experience on TouchWiz platform.
Some notable features include DSP Manager, AOSP clock/calendar/calculator, and inverted apps including E-Mail, Google Calendar, Google Music, Play Store, GMail, Hangouts, YouTube, and Google Now. Also, you will find native wifi tether working out of the box without annoying pay-to-use messages from Verizon.
Overall, Eclipse S4 ROM is probably the best hybrid ROM out there that will give you the best of both worlds.
If this is something you are looking for, try Eclipse S4 ROM this week(end) and do let me know what you think!
For installation, see our custom ROM installation guide.
What is a Custom ROM?
A custom ROM is a custom, modified operating system that you can install on your Android device. Basically it's like installing Windows OS on a Macbook. By installing a custom ROM, you can bypass stock factory settings like locked hotspot tether, install new Android versions early, or even convert your phone into another OS.
With a custom ROM, you can really maximize the capabilities of your smartphone by adding custom features that have been developed by open source developers.
How to Install Custom ROMs
First, you will need to root your device, if it is not rooted yet, follow our root tutorial and root your phone.
Once rooted, you should have TWRP installed on your phone. Installation of a custom ROM is easy if you learn the basic of it. If you don't know how to install custom ROMs using TWRP recovery, see our tutorial on How to Install Custom ROM using TWRP!
