Google Play Edition ROM with Android 4.4.2 KitKat for Verizon Galaxy S4!

For this week’s Verizon Galaxy S4 ROM of the week, check out the ported version of Google Play Edition ROM with latest Android 4.4.2 KitKat.

This ported version (from GT-i9505) brings you a great deal of speed (through GPE AND KTweaker kernel) along with “pure” Google experience.  Everything is working out of the box including data (to get 4G LTE working fully, dial “*#*#4636#*#*” then choose “LTE/CDMA/GSM”), Photosphere camera, and no additives added other than highly-tweakable KTweaker kernel, which comes with KTweaker app so you can easily overclock and undervolt your CPU/GPU.

For overclocking your CPU/GPU, I recommend around 2.106Ghz most for CPU and 600Mhz for the GPU.  You can also undervolt higher frequencies slightly to get great speeds with great battery life (see video above for example on that).

Overall, Google Play Edition ROM isn’t full of AOKP ROM Control-like customization, then again it is super stable with lots of raw speed that’s going to make TouchWiz look like a baby crawling vs. an electric Tesla, what this ROM is like.

So, if you haven’t checked it out yet, definitely give it a test drive over the week(end) and do let me know what you think!  (If you love speed, you will probably love this ROM though.)

What is a Custom ROM?

A custom ROM is a custom, modified operating system that you can install on your Android device. Basically it's like installing Windows OS on a Macbook. By installing a custom ROM, you can bypass stock factory settings like locked hotspot tether, install new Android versions early, or even convert your phone into another OS.

With a custom ROM, you can really maximize the capabilities of your smartphone by adding custom features that have been developed by open source developers.

How to Install Custom ROMs

First, you will need to root your device, if it is not rooted yet, follow our root tutorial and root your phone.

Once rooted, you should have TWRP installed on your phone. Installation of a custom ROM is easy if you learn the basic of it. If you don't know how to install custom ROMs using TWRP recovery, see our tutorial on How to Install Custom ROM using TWRP!

This is easily the best ROM that I’ve run yet for my T-Mobile s4 variant. If the Verizon port is this good, you should jump on it. I generally switch ROMs every week or two. I’ve been on this one for over 6 weeks and I doubt that I will move anytime soon. Sweet!

Is this rom ok to flash with safestrap ?

So what root process do you need to use to get this ROM on your phone? Every video i watched about this particular ROM, no one actually explains what to do to get it on the device.

Is your phone rooted yet?? If not you need to root the phone first. He has a video posted on how to do so. Then you need to should install a recovery. (Twrp, CM, safestrap) which he also has videos listed above an on YouTube showing how to do. After you have your recovery you can download the rom on your pc, move it to your phone or SD card and flash via the recovery.

Thanks. I am rooted, but with Safestrap, and according to XDA developers site, you cannot use this rom with safestrap. So I was just looking to know his exact process of flashing this particular rom on his phone from step 1. I don’t want to brick my phone.

  5. Mike says:

So how did he get this ROM on this Verizon phone with the bootloader being locked? Is hyperdrive version 4.4.2 and as fast as the ROM in this video?

    • tyebrea says:

He was rooted before the mj7 update. Verizon locked the bootloader with either the mj7 or the mk2 update. I can’t remember specially which one. But if ur on 4.3 with one of these besbands then ur bootloader is locked. You can root, but the only option to flash roms is safestrap. And the rom has to actually be compatible with safestrap. With safestrap u can only flash touch wiz based roms if im not mistaken. He mentions that this one isn’t compatible though

  6. Mike says:

Ahh, I see. Well that kinda sucks! I was hoping to be able to use a true google rom without all the touchwiz and bloatware! Thanks for your help!

So, I flashed this Rom and everything works great… Except I lost root.
I went to dev options, enabled root for apps&ADB, but none of my root apps work. Root checker says I don’t have root. I restored my stock TouchWiz 4.2.2 Rom via cwm recovery/nandroid and I still have root on that….
I’ve also tried flashing chainfires SU 1.89 on this but it says I don’t have root and I then Android keeps crashing (probably conflicting with the built-in SU app.
I can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong. I’ve rooted TONS of phones and never had an issue with any rooms before. I LOVE this Rom but I need to be able to get root somehow. Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

  12. lindsey says:

Correction. GPS not working fully. It will find me and map my.route but it is not tracking me as I move for turn by turn navigation. Any ideas? Thanks

  13. I have a Verizon S4 with MDK 4.2.2, rooted with TWRP recovery, so I think I’m all set to load this ROM.

I would love to load it immediately, but I need a stable phone. Specifically, I absolutely must have:

    1. Verizon Hotspot
    2. Root
    3. 4G
    4. GPS
    5. Camera (pictures and video)

Are all of these working and stable on this rom? Thank you for your work on this.
