For this week’s Verizon Galaxy S4 ROM of the week, check out HyperDrive ROM by XDA user Sbreen94.
Based on official Verizon firmware, the HyperDrive gives you a ton of more features over stock to give you that extra edge when showing off to your friends.
At the heart of HyperDrive ROM is the Hyperdrive Control app which allow you to get mods/add-ons through its HyperdriveOTA and fully customize your UI (such as clock, status bar, battery icon) using Custom Settings. Also included are some framework mods like Xposed App settings and Xposed Tweakbox (which allow you to add additional mods).
Other notable features include Hold-Menu button to kill app, NFC enabled on lockscreen, extended settings for MMS, extended settings for camera (higher bitrate camcorder along with volume shutter button option), extended browser settings (open up to 50 tabs!), Sony Bravia Engine, pop-up browser resizable to any size, screen-off playback YouTube app, and even some more.
Native hotspot app has been hacked (wifi tether working out of the box) so all you tether fans will be happy while multi-window has been enabled for all apps out of the box (no need to use Multi Window manager app).
Overall, I am impressed at the amount of great features that Sbreen94 has added to his impressive HyperDrive ROM in a short amount of time. Certainly, this is one of the best custom ROMs you can install on your Verizon Galaxy S4 right now. So, give it a try this week(end) and do let me know what you think!
For installation, see our custom ROM installation guide.
What is a Custom ROM?
A custom ROM is a custom, modified operating system that you can install on your Android device. Basically it's like installing Windows OS on a Macbook. By installing a custom ROM, you can bypass stock factory settings like locked hotspot tether, install new Android versions early, or even convert your phone into another OS.
With a custom ROM, you can really maximize the capabilities of your smartphone by adding custom features that have been developed by open source developers.
How to Install Custom ROMs
First, you will need to root your device, if it is not rooted yet, follow our root tutorial and root your phone.
Once rooted, you should have TWRP installed on your phone. Installation of a custom ROM is easy if you learn the basic of it. If you don't know how to install custom ROMs using TWRP recovery, see our tutorial on How to Install Custom ROM using TWRP!
