For those of you who want to root your Samsung Galaxy S4 Android smartphone, here’s how to do it easily using MotoChopper, a root script used on Motorola Qualcomm devices.

This root method will work on all Qualcomm-based Galaxy S4 running Android 4.2.2 such as T-Mobile SGH-M919, Sprint SPH-L720, US Cellular SCH-R970, Canadian SGH-i337M, Rogers, Bell, Telus, and other Qualcomm S4s.

For GT-i9505, T-Mobile Galaxy S4 SGH-M919, Sprint Galaxy S4 SPH-L720, Canadian Galaxy S4 (Bell, Rogers, Telus), US Cellular Galaxy S4 SCH-R970 root method, see the TWRP Root Method instead. (For Android 4.2.2, 4.3, 4.4.2, 4.4.3, 4.4.4, and 5.0.1 Lollipop)

For Octa-core GT-i9500 root method, see the CWM Root Method instead. (Also Sprint SPH-L720 supported using CWM root method, use CWM method if you are going to install custom ROMs)

For AT&T SGH-i337, Verizon Galaxy S4 SCH-i545, Galaxy S4 Active on Android 4.4.2, see How to Root AT&T/Verizon Galaxy S4 on Android 4.4.2 instead!

Firmware Updates – Due to firmware updates being pushed out, this root method may not work on latest AT&T Galaxy S4 MF3 firmware or Verizon Galaxy S4 ME7 firmware, instead please see How to Root for Verizon Galaxy S4 on Build VRUAME7 or AT&T Galaxy S4 on MF3! [OLD]

For Verizon S4 SCH-i545, you will need to flash a pre-release kernel before following this tutorial and also re-flash stock kernel, see here for details FIRST!

UPDATE: For those of you with T-Mobile’s latest UVUAMDL firmware or Sprint’s latest VPUAMDL firmware, this root method will not work. BUT, you can use CWM or TWRP method below along with kernel fix to root. (See Sprint Kernel fix and T-Mobile Kernel fix)

You can use this root method on Windows, Mac, and Linux/Ubuntu.

This root method also just “gives you root”, does not install custom recovery so it is very easy to also unroot by using universal Android unroot method.

For rooting Galaxy S4 on Mac OSX, see full video tutorial here:

For rooting Galaxy S4 on Linux/Ubuntu, see full video tutorial here:

Step 1. Go to Settings->More->About device then hit “Build Number” about 5-10 times until you see “Developer mode has been enabled” message.howto-root-galaxys4-1

Step 2. Next hit the Back button and you should see a new menu called “Developer options”, hit that new menu button!

Step 3. Make sure Developer options is checked ON and also check “USB debugging” ON.

Step 4. Connect a micro-USB cable from your Galaxy S4 to your computer, you should see “Allow USB debugging” window pop-up on your phone, hit “OK”.  If you don’t see it yet, just skip this step and check back on Step 7.

Step 5. If using Mac or Linux, skip this step as you don’t need to install drivers.  For Windows users, go to Device Manager on your computer and make sure you have something like “Samsung Android ADB Interface” or some type of “ADB Interface”.  If you don’t see it, you don’t have Galaxy S4 USB drivers installed, download and install Galaxy S4 Windows drivers.

Step 6. Download and unzip, you should find a bunch of files in it.

For Windows, double-click on “run.bat” to start the rooting script.

For Mac or Linux, type:

cd Downloads/motochopper
cd motochopper
chmod 755 *
sudo sh

Step 7. Hit enter to begin rooting.

If you skipped Step 4, you should now see “Allow USB debugging” window pop-up on your phone, hit “OK”.

Also make sure to hit “Agree” on your phone if you see “Verify apps?” window pop up during rooting.

Step 8. When done, hit Enter and your Galaxy S4 will be rooted and will reboot.

Step 9. After rebooting, you will find a new app called “Superuser” in your app drawer, congrats!

Step 10. You can verify you have full root on your Galaxy S4 by downloading and running rooted app like Titanium Backup app.

    Will this work on i9500?

  2. jay says:

great stuff bro!! Bro can you show how to sim unlock the i9505 model as well.?

    • admin says:

If there is a method I will post of course!

      • Milyenair says:

I don’t understand why there hasn’t been a reply to the initial problems stated above. I’ve searched the entire thread. What’s the fix to update the SU?

        • Max Lee says:

Use the TWRP or CWM method along with Adam kernel for GT-i9505.

          • Milyenair says:

THanks for replying Max. I just must be missing something that is probably obvious. I have the AT&T and the CWM method requires your phone to already be rooted. When I attempt it and get to the data file it says my phone is not rooted even though I have the Super User from using this method above. Just gives me binary out of date.

            • Max Lee says:

You might be on the latest update that was just pushed out, if so I should have a solution soon.

              • Jamar says:

That is what I have learned after more research in the XDA Forums. When you get a solution are you going to post it in the Weekly Newsletter? Thanks in advance.

                • Max Lee says:

                  Yup of course.

                  • tom says:

when i found out about this update on atat i did my best not to update but everytime i connected to wifi or mobile data network it would rapidly download it, even though i would disable it, it would just reopen, i called atat and complained to them about how they prevented me from rooting my phone they apologized haha

Try reflashing cwm with odin as soon as you see PASS! pull the battery out then put it back in and use buttons to enter cwm right away.

      Thanks, Max

      Hi Max,

Thanks for all what u do, very informative and detailed. I tried to root my S4 SGH-i337M with Rogers using the Motochopper method, but unfortunately unsuccessful, it gets stuck at ” * daemon not running. starting it now on port 5037 * * daemon started successfully * [*] Device not found . I look forward to ur newsletter and will keep digging until I get it done.

      Thanks again.

Do I need the usb driver if I am using a mac? I tried to download the driver and it says it’s an .exe file. It also makes no mention of mac os x.

  5. heath says:

I’m having a similar issue to Pedro, but do not see it as a common issue. On two different computers I have installed the drivers and the phone is discovered in system and drivers are fine. But, with usb debugging enabled, I am not prompted to accept the RSA from my computer. When I run the .bat it never finds my device. Any suggestions?

  6. Ryan S says:

Hey Max! Huge Fan been following you for years now. I really appreciate all that you do. Quick questions. Do you know of any custom recovery images for the S4 and how soon before some custom roms start to roll out?

  7. ethem says:

  9. Chris Cinelli says:

Max are there any known problems with lag or errors with the phone after root? Is WiFi Tethering working once the root is done or do we have to wait for that?

    • admin says:

Root does not cause any lag or errors, that would be from something else, wifi tethering can be done but depends on your carrier, I will have all methods for all carriers posted soon!

      • David says:

I have GS4 ATT version but VPN settings changed to operate network on StraightTalk. Do I have to do anything different or just follow the ATT root tutorial? Also, will the current layout (which I customized) stay after root, or will everything get organized differently?

        • David says:

Not sure what to do with my ATT Galaxy S4 which is running on Straight Talk network. Should I unlock using ATT tutorial?

  10. Nicholas says:

    Hey man,

Trying to root my i9505 and it’s telling me the superuser bianary must be updated. I’ve tried the process several times to no avail. Do you know of the issue? And if you do, do you have a solution?

    Thank you.

    Love your sites.

  11. Nick says:

I have the i9505 version. Firmware is xxuamdm. I’m in Germany, so it’s the german version of the firmware, but it is the i9505 snapdragon version.

I get the same problem on other root methods as well with Supersu.

Thanks a lot for the reply

    • admin says:

Do you get any error messages?

      • Nicholas says:

none what so ever. None on the phone, or the install script.

        • admin says:

Your phone is probably rooted, just try opening a rooted app, you don’t have to update the binaries, sometimes they may fail but you can still have root.

      • alfonso says:

after rooting my gs4 and updating the super su app i keep getting a warnning on the notification bar saying
(an application is trying to access your phone we recommend rebooting), do you have any idea what this could be.?

BTW thanks for all the great work its greatly apreciated

  12. Nick says:

How would I go about removing that now?

    • admin says:

Try going into SuperUser and make sure you didn’t disable root access for your apps. I believe you have root you probably just didn’t hit allow. You can use Play Store to remove the app though.

  13. Nicholas says:

Yeah I don’t know what’s going on with it. I appreciate your help. Nothing I do fixes the issue. Going to download the original firmware and start over from scratch. Maybe I’ll just wait for an all in one root and recovery solution.

Thanks again for the help. Let me know if you find a solution.

P.S. Keep up the great work.

    • admin says:

Yeah just try it again from scratch if you can, it seems like when you have installed SuperSU it may have messed it up for some odd reason, not sure but there should be CWM recovery posted soon for i9505 anyways.

  14. Brandon says:

I am having an issue when I root my U.S. Cellular GS4 the rear camera will become very blurry. The only way to get rid of it is to unroot and do a factory data rest. Any idea how to fix this?

  15. Nicholas says:

So it turns out I was getting a failure notice on the computer end. Right at the point when it’s trying to gain root. Not sure why. But I think I’ll just be patient and wait for a full root and recovery solution.

    Thanks again for the help.

Just rooted my S4 Tmobile. It works. Thanks.
Now here is the question, how to install CWM to the rooted Samsung galaxy S4.

    • Max Lee says:

Follow Steps 1 thru 6 here:

  23. Alan says:

Nice, that’s the fastest I ever rooted a phone. Thanks.

  24. matt says:

hello will this work for the Canadian TELUS version sgh-i337m?

  25. Jake says:

Max, you are the Man! Worked the first try on my Mac and my ATT S4.
My Question is, Can i freeze ATT and Samsung apps that I don’t need?
    Thanks again!

    • Max Lee says:

You can yes but be careful as sometimes freezing can cause soft bricks but you can unroot now there’s AT&T stock firmware.

      • Alec says:

How do you do a factory reset on an AT&T GS4 that has been rooted (i.e. go back entirely to stock)? Also, I’m on a Mac if that makes any difference. Thanks!

  26. Jamie says:

Hi. Thanks for the guid,- rooted phone, removed some bloatware and unrooted again using the “universal unroot” app.

The Problem: In the Staus section in “About my device”, it says

Deveice Status: “Custom”. As a result I am not able get software updates ..

I tried using “Triangle away” to reset flash counter, but it still says “Cusom”. Any idea on how to get it back to normal ??

    • Jamie says:

      Hi again.
Followed your guide “How to Unroot Galaxy S4 and Remove Root Completely!”, and I am now back to Deveice Status:
“Official”. Great 🙂 I just disabled the bloat programs, so I´m good. Beginning to understand what people means when they say that android is “open”.. 🙂 So far, I am not missing my old iPhone 🙂

  27. stylez says:

Worked perfectly. Thanks for the easy to follow instructions.

  28. Michael says:

Hi Max. I followed the steps you posted here. It did work. But, after I reboot my ATT S4 system. It stuck at the startup page and won’t boot. 🙁 I don’t know how to fix it, this is my first android phone. Could you give me a hand?

    • Rameez Waliyani says:

i have the same problem. it starts up and goes to samsung screen with custom unlock logo then the phone boots into android system rcovery. how do i fix this and start up normally???

  29. Jake says:

When I try to run Triangle Away it says “Could not locate hidden partition. Ar you not running ICS?”
    What’s going on?

  30. Jake says:

Triangle Away v2.90 is compatible with my rooted ATT S4

  31. John says:

I rooted, but then decided to unroot. Now I get a message stating, “Your device has been modified. Software updates are not available” when I click UPDATE. Does this mean I will no longer receive OTA updates on my phone? I removed root and did nothing else to the phone.

    • Max Lee says:

You can get updates still by installing rooted CWM/TWRP flashable zips which is better anyways as you can keep root. Once you root, you don’t need OTA updates ever again.

      • luke says:

Im a noob i know…however i followed your instructions on this page, and rooted my s4 i9500 international. “device has been modified software updates not available” has come up . where do i get rooted cwm / twrp flashable zips? Do i just install them through the “vol up, home, power” boot once the zips are on my sd card?

  32. John says:

I rooted, but then decided to unroot. Now I get a message stating, “Your device has been modified. Software updates are not available” when I click UPDATE. Does this mean I will no longer receive OTA updates on my phone? I removed root and did nothing else to the phone.

    • Max Lee says:

You cannot use Kies to unroot, you need to use ODIN and stock firmware to unroot, please see:

  33. john says:

I did not use kies to unroot. I downloaded supersu from the play store and unrooted as per your video. Then I just checked for upgrades on the device itself by clicking check for updates.

    • Max Lee says:

Oh did you also uninstall any instances of SuperSU and SuperUser?
That should work but if that doesn’t work you can also unroot using stock firmware, which should reset that.

Just run the ODIN and stock firmware without doing any wipe data/factory reset.

      • john says:

How do you uninstall instances of superuser/su?? In su i just clicked on unroot. Unfortunately there is no stock firmware for my i337 on MTS in Canada.

        • Max Lee says:

Go to Play Store and search for SuperSU or SuperUser and make sure they are all uninstalled. As for stock firmware for Canadian Galaxy S4, they are coming shortly, they should be here within a week or two at the most.

  34. Brent says:

Worked great on my Roger’s SGH-i337M in Canada

  35. purvil says:

    Hey Max,
I have rooted S4 using Adam Kernel. So now if I want to unroot my S4 , do i have to flash the stock kernel and then flash the stock firmware or directly flash the firmware??

    • purvil says:

and where can i find the kernel?

      • Max Lee says:

You can extract the boot.img from stock firmware then re-zip it in tar format and flash with ODIN.

Are you trying to get OTA updates or return for warranty? If for OTA updates, you can find some CWM-flashable zip files with the update on XDA which will let you update and keep root and if returning for warranty, I do suggest using the full unroot method here:

  36. tony says:

so I have a US Tmobile s4 quadcore (sgh-m919) and I had an OTA update around noon on may 6th. I’ve tried rooting the phone multiple times on my Windows 8 and followed all your instructions step by step

but then when it says “daemon successfully started” and i hit ok on my phone to allow usb debugging, it goes through a bunch of steps and then shows “failure: installation file already exists” … seems like it can’t push the superuser.apk file even though upon reboot I have the superuser app and when i try to open it, says the binary file needs to be updated and when i click update, some error shows up.

the phone is not rooted for sure since titanium won’t work and the device build still reads official…

do you have any idea whats going on? Please let me know, thanks

    • tony says:

forgot to mention that the android adb interface was installed as well. I just uninstalled superuser from the google playstore, now everything looks almost exactly the same up till the point where under Success, the 3rd line says failure instead of Success…

this is really baffling to me now cause no one else is getting this but me, please let me know if there is a way to fix this, thanks

      • tony says:

yup just did the whole process yet again, rebooted both my pc and phone, and uninstalled and reinstalled the samsung drivers and now it won’t get past the “daemon started successfully” screen, no prompt at all…

        please help!

        • Oz says:

If you installed that OTA update then you might have a locked kernel now, so it cant currently be rooted with this method. If its not that then make sure you use the usb cable that came with the phone and use a direct usb port on your computer and not a usb port hub. I hope that helps.

          • Max Lee says:

With the latest OTA update, root has been locked from the kernel but this isn’t hard to get around, we just need a kernel with it disabled, which should be available shortly as soon as T-Mobile releases kernel sources. Just give it couple more days, we will post a kernel as soon as it’s available.

          • tony says:

oh ok thanks a lot guys.. I guess i’ll be checking regularly then, thanks again

            • Max Lee says:

XDA developer ptmr3 already has a kernel it’s just matter of time before he releases it, you can follow him on Twitter for latest updates. Should be any minute probably by tomorrow.

  37. Abdullah says:

Excellent worked for my rogers S4. Now only if the app2sd hack was available for S4 🙁 would really make it cool.

  38. Chris says:

Thanks for the help Max. Rooted both my Samsung GS3 and new GS4 using your websites. Planning next to get a Note 3 when they come out and of course will stay tuned for a root on that. Mad props and appreciation, followed you on Facebook and subscribed on YouTube. Peace.

  39. Alec says:

AT&T pushed out an update that I accidentally clicked yes to today. Will this root method still work?

    • Alec says:

Also for those who see this, I was wondering how to unroot my GS4 on my Mac. I know how to do it on a PC, but won’t have access to one for several weeks. Thanks!

    • Matt says:

Alec, I ran the update the other day. I just had to redo the root, but it still worked for me. I uninstalled superuser after the update, then reran the bat file and it rooted fine. However, I’m suffering from lock ups. But then Again, I had those problems before the update. Have you had any lock up problems with at&t version?

      • Matt says:

By the other day, I mean yesterday. I checked for updates today and it said none available. I am assuming it’s the same update but it may not be. It seemed to work for me.

      • Alec says:

What do you mean by lock ups? Do you mean that the device just locks by itself? If so, no.

        • matt says:

no I mean if I let it sit awhile the screen freezes, and thus needs to reboot before it will work again. or when I swipe to unlock it freezes and needs a reboot. seems glitchy.

  40. Matt says:

I have att version. Ever since I rooted it, it seems to lock up constantly. Is there any custom roms available I can install that will be more stable ? Or should I consider a deroot? I mean, it reboots 15 times a day…Whenever it stays locked for awhile.

  41. D.J. Preiser says:

I tried to root the Sprint version. All seemed to be ok, but when I click on the superuser icon, I get the following message:

The superuser binary (su) must be updated.
    Please choose an installation method.
Recovery mode installation is recommended for HTC devics.
    Cancel Recovery Install Install

I did notice that one line during the install script indicates failure, but it runs to completion and reboots.
I have the latest drivers installed and USB debugging is enabled.
Neither Recovery Install nor Install will work.
When I try to install an application requiring root access, it tells me the phone is not rooted.
Can anyone let me know what I may be doing wrong?

  42. B.Q says:

after installation, i have the superuser app but when i download and install titanium backup, it shows an error message “Sorry, i could not acquire root privileges. this application will not work! please verify that your ROM is rooted and try again. yup i got the same thing yesterday, apparently we all ran a OTA update before rooting which updated the kernal. now we gotta wait for tmobile to release the source so they can work their way around it and update the code before those of us that updated our s4’s to root it properly…

  43. D.J. Preiser says:

I have the same exact problem and get the same command window.

  44. Artur Silva says:

Hey max, i’ve tried everything but i never get the prompt on the phone to allow debugging, is it suposed to take long?

  51. Teespoon says:

I’m getting “failure” when it attempts to root my phone in motochopper and im not getting any pop up asking to enable debugging even though its already enabled in dev options. I have the US sprint version. Can anyone help me with this?

    • D.J. says:

I’ve been at this with my Sprint S4 for the past few days. I’ve tried the motochopper, CWM and TWRP method, none work. You’ll get the debugging popup only the first time, then it is remembered on subsequent attempts.
In each case I have positive communications with the phone, but the phone remains in a locked state.
I am speculating that when the phone is first activated, Sprint is doing an Over the Air updated that locks the phone, if it ever was unlocked to start with.
I’ve also tried to use ATT and TMobile SIM chips, but get an error message that the SIM chip is not recognized.
We’ll have to wait this one out.

  52. D.J. says:

I’ve just positively confirmed that the Sprint problem is due to an OTA block that runs when you activate the phone. I’ve just pulled out my wife’s new non-activated S4 and rooted it with no problem whatsoever.

    • leaps says:

Is there a way to get around this. My phone is already activated. I’m getting the [+] Failure! line error as well during the CWM root process. I’m also on Sprint.

  53. Denny says:

I used ODIN to revert back to the stock ROM and refused to let the update install, we’ll see how that works until there is an update to motochopper that will work for the OTA release. Oh, I also tried root keeper once I had root, the OTA still took it out.

    • Denny says:

It’s been 3 days, root still holding strong. My phone is still prompting me to install the update but luckily it won’t do it automatically. Hope they find a fix soon!

How can we root after the L720VPUAMDL update?

  56. scott says:

I see others are having the same problem but figured I’d still mention that I successfully rooted using the above method, and then Sprint’s OTA update a few days ago killed root access, and retrying the above method no longer works.

    • Ogongyi says:

First unroot to the older version VPUAMDC (using sprint stock firmware) then root with CWM/TWRP.
I have tried to root with VPUAMDL but failed. I have tried method from XDA developers but failed as well. (

  57. NeilTDavid says:

If you have the updated ROM, you have to first UNCHECK reboot, install CWM or TWRP from ODIN, and after it says success, PULL the phone battery, and DO NOT reboot it. Put the battery back in, hold up, home button, and power, and ONLY release power when the blue text appears at the upper left corner. Only then will install the custom recovery.

Then when you reboot (exit) from this recovery, choose the option to disable stock recovery.

  58. Rameez Waliyani says:

Hi Max. I followed the steps you posted here. i rooted my phone and confirmed root. But, after I rebooted my ATT S4 It got stuck at the samsung screen with the custom unlock logo. then it reboots and goes into android recovery sytem and it u choose reboot system now from the menu it repeats the process. please helppp.

Rameez, use odin and flash stock rom

I check the log and there is none. I also try to use Google Play to update the Superuser but got the same error any idea ???

My reason for wanting to root is to eliminate bloatware and clean up the phone a bit.

COMPLETELY new to the root process, but your video was perfect on a step by step instruction. I completed it, but still no root access. I saw that there’s a solution out there, but it’s only for PC’s. Can you upload a post for Mac users on getting around this or is the current solution for PC only?

Keep up the videos man. You’re my first and only source on the Android stuff. Found you on YouTube and really appreciate you showing amateurs how to get their phone rooted and making it easy. Keep up the solid work, bro!

  70. Steve says:

Did it twice, samething. Then I took the apk file it self, put it on mt phone and instqlled it. Still same results.Any ideas?

  72. Matt says:

On step 8 the only difference I saw on my phone than what you have posted on your picture is that my phone said “[+] Failure!” on the line where instead you showed “[+] Success!”. Everything else was the same.

I then looked to see if I had SuperUser app and I do. However when I downloaded a Root App, it notified me that my phone was not rooted. Not sure what to do here. Might you have some direction?

    • Denny says:

Looks like you installed the OTA update, once you do that you’re sunk. You have to ODIN back to the pre-update ROM to get rooted.

So I am able to successfully push superuser but after that I get a failure. When I start su, it ask for an update, and also Titanium fails to start (or recognize root).

My original USCellular S4 that I originally purchased a few months ago had a issue with the floor that it was dropped on and subsequently I just had it replaced. Well my replacement is the same phone, except it is baseband R970VXUAMDL, Build No: JDQ39.R970VXUAMDL, Hardware Version R970.03. I attempted to root, via normal methods and while the rooting appeared to be sucessful; when rebooted, the root was inaffective, the messages kept coming across that titanium was granted root; however the message kept reappearing and no root was actually granted when you go into program.

    I would like to know:

    1. Is there a way to install CM based on this hardware version
    2. Is there a SU alternative or work around that a newbie can follow?

I have reinstalled the stock images and I had to go back to and d/l those. Im kinda frustrated as nothing is working and I had a great Nandroid backup 45 minutes prior to dropping my phone and I can’t restore it because I cant gain root.

Any suggestions or direction would be greatly appreciated…

I did try the T-Mob variant (DarthVader) only to turn my phone into a non-working T-Mob device and flash; which I was not happy about; so I just reflashed back to stock.

I have a AT&T I337 motto copp chopper root with stock Rom and twrp installed. I tried the googleedition rom and didn’t like it so I used my recover I made in twrp before flashing to bring my phone back to stock. Now every time I restart my phone it hangs at Samsung custom and I have to restore from my back up. It starts up fine the first time for some reason after that it hangs. Any ideas? Thanks

    • Max Lee says:

Make sure you do a factory reset when installing a rom such as Google Play Edition ROM otherwise you will def. hang.

      • chris says:

I did a format data and factory reset from twrp but it still does it. Should I try and unroot and install stock? I’m just not sure. And I’m scared of bricking I don’tknow much about android this is my first android device. I’ve read a ton and followed your directions on the Google play edition install. What is def? And how can I fix that with out restoring?

  142. Kim Callis says:

I have been waiting patiently, but I have yet to see that anyone has successfully root a i970 US Cellular phone. Is that correct or did I miss the correct way to root this phone?

  143. Ty Carter says:

I have had my USC Gal S4 rooted since the day I got it 3 months ago and even dropped my phone and had it replaced and still have that one rooted; I have posted multiple successes about this in this forum and site.

So, Yes it is possible; but you have to understand what your doing else your gonna cause a mess with your phone and doing this is NOT for the faint of heart and you have to be willing to take the reality that may brick your phone; albeit 99% of them that are can be dynamically recovered, but again you gotta have a clue as to what your doing. One other thing.. You will void your brand new warranty of your phone….

Im running CM10.1, nightly July 7 currently; and I absolutely love it. There are some little quarks with this; like the BT not staying connected to my handsfree device or my car and the rare occasional 4G signal dropout.. These are well known and documented issues that have yet to be 100% corrected; but im willing to live with them.

If I knew how to compile my own ROM, I would, but I don’t have a clue, so I have to wait just like everyone else. I am using the general CM10.1 for jflteusc… I have tried, unsuccessfully, I might add, to use most of the other builds, like Revolt ROM,, Paranoid and there is something in the buildtree that is improperly setting up the 4G side of these custom ROMs’. All were able to be installed but none worked because most improperly set defaulted subscription type to NV and when the RUSIM/SIM is selected it will not keep the changes.

I have confirmed this issue with the dev of Revolt, and he explained to me, he didn’t have this type of phone and this custom ROM was built as a subvert of HTC and “ported” to adapt. Don’t ask what that means because I don’t know. All I can tell you is the straight non-customized ROM CM10.1 for JFLTEUSC does work; but like the others, you have to change the LTE setup to reflect RUSIM/SIM subscription type and you also have to change the Mobile Network to LTE/CDMA/EvDo 1 from GSM…

Ill be glad to help you if you run into issues…

Thanks.. the link you gave me worked perfectly for my S4 Active. VERY SIMPLE.
If anyone else wants to root their S4 ACTIVE… that link has a working method.

Be sure to follow the part about turning off the AT&T nag screen and AT&T update. That part requires reading a few times and downloading a couple apps from google play.

Still watching for an update on how to enable the additional t-mo frequencies. Would be nice to have until t-mo gets around to updating the rest of their network sometime in the next 20 years.

    Hi All,

Sorry if this is a really stupid question.

I bought a Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition like 2-3 weeks ago and have been using it ever since. I switched from iPhone to Android and bought the GPE based on many recommendations that the stock OS is better.

But for some reason, I want to experience the features that come on the TouchWiz as well. After a lot of googling and looking around on the forums, I can’t seem to find the solution.

Is there anyway to install the TouchWiz interface on my s4 and get all the features that come with the s4 (like Air Gestures, Smart Pause etc) ?

In Ubuntu, the terminal spits out errors of being unable to read and execute the command scripts of the file.

I read that new updates for later S4’s have prevented rooting. Booo.

  156. Greg Perry says:

(I originally posted this to the TMobile UVUAMDL board but I think this is a more appropriate place for it. Sorry for the double post.)

I am new to rooting. I’’ve had my Samsung Galaxy S4 from TMobile since the week it came out and keep it updated. Here is the about-the-phone screen shot:

I assume because I see the letters UVUAMDL down there at the end of the Build Number that I have the updated firmware that requires the T-Mobile UVUAMDL Firmware Update Root Fix here:

Am I correct about that? Or not?

Once I do that and do the root fix, if you say I need that, then can I do the regular S4 rooting process you describe here in your Hot To Root Galaxy S4 article?

(summary: Looking at my screen shot, do I need to apply the Update Root Fix, if so, can I do the regular S4 root using MotoChopper?)

I tried to root my Galaxy S4 (I337). Everything looked like it went through, I had a Superuser app now. But when I go to Titanium back up it says:

“Sorry I could not acquire root privileges. This application will *not* work! Please verify that your ROM is rooted, and try again….This attempt was made using the “su” command.”

So I tried to root again through terminal and it failed because the files already existed. What do I do now?

  162. kyle daniels says:

how do you know if the root went through. I have superuser but I downloaded a tethering app and all it says if you do not have root access. I followed the same galaxy s4 (sprint) program above and still nothing, not sure why it is not working as this is a simple 10 step process.

during the rooting black screen process it says:
    Rooting phone…

It looks like there is no sound way as of yet to root and flash our Galaxy s4 with out a high risk of bricking our phones or at least going through a lot of problems. I hope there is some solid solution soon. I regret buying a Galaxy s4 and selling my Galaxy s2. My s2 was faster, smoother, and more options than this s4 stock rom. You people who make these roms and get rid of all that forced onto us sales crap (bloat ware) to make use of the hardware we buy the way us consumers would like to use it. I would like to say a big thank you.

    • Larry says:

I don’t know what S4 you bought. My is very fast, the battery lasts for 2 days and yes it is rooted and Beanstalk rom. I am loving it and it is much faster than by S2 or S3 was. If you lived close to me I would be glad to help you so good luck.

      • tsmith154 says:

Hey thanks for your response. I am very comfortable flashing my s2 but what I have been reading about the s4 it seems it is very tricky with a lot of bugs. I truly am looking for all the functions still working and getting rid of all the bloat ware. Although with the stock rom I have found some problems with the camera. It locks up and shuts down the app if I try to use a specific option, I do not know what it does anyways. That is no big deal though. I did allow the stock firmware update on my phone (AT&T sgh-i337) cpu: armeabi-7va. Dev. Software V. : 05 Bootloader: i337ucuamf3.

When I use these custom roms on my s2 I seem to always set my phone up the same way. But I seem to like the speed and battery savings I was getting. Since the s4 is relatively new and the roms are new for this phone do you think it is worth it? Is it really, for this phone, that much of an improvement over the stock rom. I really hate the bloat ware though. I did Disable allot of the ones I feel safe to. But is disabling them just as good as rooting the phone and deleting them? I just counted 46 apps. I disabled.

For those having problems with your SGH i337 and the debugging mode failures:

I was having the same issue and here is my solution, first I did a factory reset, not positive if you need to do this but I did anyway.
I then pushed the build number 5 times and activated developer options and checked the usb debugging as instructed.
I then downloaded the drivers and installed them. I then plugged my phone in and still wasn’t prompted like it said so I proceeded to motochop.
Here is what I did differently, I actually extracted motochop on to my computer rather than just opening it and clicking run.
I extracted it, clicked run and got the prompts like in this tutorial and everything worked out as in the tutorial.

Hello, this is a wonderful website. I was wondering if anyone could help me with my rooting problem. I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 SCHI545 (Verizon) . Downloaded Samsung USB Driver from their website. Build Number is Enabled, and USB debugging is Checked! Downloaded and opened Motochopper. Double clicked on run.bat and cmd command window opened. The problem is that it i stuck on DAEMON STARTED SUCCESSFULLY. It will not go further. I waited almost half an hour.
Tried Towelroot does not work either. Hope you can help me root my Samsung Galaxy S4. Thanks in advanced

    AT&T SGH-I337, Android 4.2.2, I337UCUAMDL
At first try seamed to work like others have reported; rebooted just fine, but Titanium stated I had no root access. I uninstalled my Avast anti-virus and tried again. This time I saw the custom unlock logo on start up and when I lunched Titanium I got a message from superuser to give Titanium root access.

Thank you very much, I look forward to installing a new ROM and getting my phone performing BETTER than new!

    Thanks again,

Will this root method work on the sgh-i337 on 5.0.1 lollipop?

  227. Peter says:

    I have a Galaxy S4 SGH-i337 5.0.1. I also have a MAC. I was told by
Droidriven at xda dev that “Zedomax has the rooting methods for all the S4 models and all the builds they come with, if you don’t see a method for yours then there probably isn’t one.” –I haven’t found one on your site as yet. If there is no root for this phone, please let me know. Also, perhaps you can show me where I can find instructions for going back to KitKat, so I can root this phone again.
